The video we watched in class last Wednesday was, My Country-Rights for Disabled. It was an eye opening video that most people don’t know about, the long fight people with disabilities have been going through to get the rights they have today. It started back in the early 1900’s with the concert on the Lincoln memorial steps that was the first step forward with trying to get some rights for United States citizens with disabilities. I had no idea that the ADA was passed only twenty years ago by president George H.W Bush. I have always seen buildings and side walks all my life with ramps so people in wheel chairs can get up and down from the street to the walk way. I had no idea that those things I saw in my everyday life had only been there for a few years and not every building before hand had ramps so people could get in and out very easily. I found it very shocking how people never once thought about those other citizens who couldn’t walk and enter there buildings like a restaurant or a grocery store. The law that stupid people could not vote is no longer in action and that right there shows a big step for us as a nation. Hopefully in the future we all can all rise together as one nation that supports everyone no matter their skin color or disabilities. That is a day we can all wish for and be proud of when it does happen. [continues]
