A Changed View of Disability
Sociology of Disability has been a challenging, but intriguing course. I learned things that I never sat down and took the time to think about. The change from what I knew to what I know is prominent to me with the readings, papers, activities, and assignments that I completed.
My written works at the beginning of the semester were written with little understanding of what exactly disability was. I wasn’t aware of what exactly disability was in a broad spectrum. I also was not aware of the language barriers that were present in society. As the semester continued, my writing came with more understanding of what disability and a better understanding of how to analyze what I was reading.
My reactions to the readings/what I learned in this course started out as not much of a surprise, but as the readings focused on more difficult topics (such as sterilizing of the disabled), I found myself shocked at how people with disabilities were and still are treated. The first part of the course provided general information on disability, the definition of disability, etc. As the course continued, I found myself sickened at the way people with disabilities had to face society.
My use of language gradually changed as the course continued. My use of person-first language was essentially non-existent at the beginning of the semester. When we learned exactly how to use person-first language and did an activity on it, I could see some of my writings change. It’s still difficult to use because I’m not accustomed to it, but the more I use it, the easier it will become.
My opinion of those with disabilities before this course was that they were their own group of people that those of us who are non-disabled should have minimal contact with. My view definitely changed as I went through the class. I know now that society stigmatizes those with individuals and it’s easy to go along with the... [continues]
