CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Statement of the Problem

1. Why is there a need to learn the English language?
2. What are the factors that give rise to some difficulties before learning English? 3. What are the major skills or core elements of the English language that give rise to some difficulties upon learning it? 4. What are the most common errors that are produced the learners of English as a language? 5. What are some of the alternative means of improving English skills and proficiency? 6. What are some of the most conventional and widely-used methods of studying English? 7. In what does the dominance and prevalence of the English language affects the number of people who study the aforementioned language?

Objectives of the Study

1. To know the reason of importance of learning the English Language. 2. To identify the factors that give rise to some difficulties before learning English. 3. To determine the core elements that give rise to difficulties in learning the English language. 4. To identify the common errors that are produced by the learners of English as a second language. 5. To enumerate some alternative means of improving English skills and proficiency. 6. To know some conventional and widely-used methods of studying English. 7. To find out how the dominance and prevalence of the English language affects the number of its learners.

Significance of the Study

Being one of the most widely-used international languages of the world, learning the English language gives a very great advantage to those who study it, especially in this age where the occurrence of modernization and commercialization is clearly observed. Knowing the difficulties in learning the English language and other related aspects is a very useful tool for all, especially to professors and instructors who use English as their medium of instruction. Specifically, this study will benefit the following persons and institutions in the entire community of this university: STUDENTS This study aims to assess the background and the nature of the problems of the students in learning English. This study also suggests some alternatives in learning English and achieving good English skills and proficiency. TEACHERS Being the direct instructors to the students, teachers are the ones who will interpret and apply solutions to solve the difficulties of the students in learning English. This study can also give them ideas about the proper and applicable teaching approach(es) of the mentioned subject. RESEARCHERS This particular study can be a source of substantial information about the topic concerned for further studies to be made, or recommendations and suggestions to this study. COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS – LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT This study is the bridge between the problem and the direct providers of solutions – the difficulties met by the students and the instructors. Through this study, the PLM CLA-Language Department can be able to inform the instructors of the said problem. UNIVERSITY RESEARCH DEPARTMENT This study is another source of data for related studies that will be conducted in the future. Additionally, this can be reference of experimentations related to the topic in order to know, assess, and provide solutions to the problems that will be identified in this study.
