Different Worlds - Educating Rita vs. shawshank redemption
Explain how challenges of venturing into the world can be outweighed by the possibilities that come from personal growth.
Barriers of endeavouring into the abyss are not worthwhile to overcome since growth will undermine your perception of ultimate happiness. Since individuals inevitably sacrifice a part of themselves and does not provide ultimate happiness for society. The prescribed text "Educating Rita" by Willy Russell showcases Rita as losing all of her individuality by gaining knowledge. Mirroring the above thesis, my related text," The Shawshank Redemption" directed by Frank Darabont encapsulates the idea of institutionalisation.
Education is a supplement for the old lifestyle giving new ways to live with detrimental side effects. In the play “Educating Rita”, Rita assumes that education is an opportunity for finding herself but she is merely transitioning from one social class to another. Rita’s education has an oppressive effect on her personality. Frank wants her to 'discipline' her mind, but what he means is find a less subjective (personal) way to look at literature. The irony is that this will make Rita less spontaneous and it might hinder her passion for the truth and for life. Education and Alcohol are of both a means of satisfaction for Frank. Giving an education substitutes the need to drink highlighting his futile predicament since by teaching Rita, she is putting ‘nothing of her’ in her essays whereas her previous essay was filled with subjectivity and by drinking he is losing a part of himself and . Consequently, she is conforming to the social class and meeting the needs and wants of that class but that is not ultimate happiness since they are not completely her wants and needs. Therefore, referring to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, as she is gaining self-actualisation she is losing her belonging and love nature since she runs away from Denny and drives Frank away.

Mirroring the above statement for “The Shawshank Redemption”. Convicted

Significant experiences in people’s lives provide opportunities for growth and development. Going ‘Into the world’ means moving from familiar experiences to new horizons. When going from familiar experiences to new ones, obstacles are usually overcome before being totally successful. Individuals might be given advice or guided through the transformation to reaching new horizons. Great rewards and opportunities also come about while going through the process of growth and development. The film “Educating Rita”, by Willy Russel, about the transformation of a woman going into the world, is great proof for the point of going ‘Into the World’. It is also apparent in the film “Remember the Titans” and through my own personal experience.…

Relationships can mould or trigger change, and change is seen throughout Educating Rita. Rita embarks on an Open University course as she wants more out of her life. Rita see’s education as an exit route from her current life, she is “out of step” with her husband, family and friends – Rita wants to “discover [herself] first”, before wanting to compensate with having a child with Denny. Denny’s obsession of one day settling down with a family leads to the later divorce and failure of their marriage. Rita’s initial depiction of Denny towards Frank was that Denny “was blind”, Rita differentiates herself by stating that “[she ] wants to see”. Denny does not understand nor is willing to negotiate or communicate with Rita throughout act one, Denny’s aggressive behaviour leads to the savage action of burning her books, in scene five, and later Rita’s moving out of the house. This change was a consequence of Rita’s action to educate herself, despite Rita’s suffering she is still sympathetic and forgiving…

Through Educating Rita, Russell has effectively portrayed both the characters of Rita and Frank forming a relationship which ultimately moves them into the world through different experiences of extensions and limitations on individual freedom. Rita finds herself through getting educated by her tutor Frank who extends her individual freedom by providing her with several beneficial lessons, but at the same time this conflicts with the expectations that her society and especially her partner Denny have of her, which is limiting to her freedom because they are dragging her down. This can be seen through the scene where Rita is explaining to Frank how this obstacle is affecting her study. Denny’s dislike towards Rita attending the tutoring sessions is due to his fear of her being transformed in a way that is foreign to him and his society. “He said either stop coming here and get off the pill or I could get out altogether” is a quote from Rita from this scene who is referring to her husband Denny, who plays the symbolic role of a character from this class of society who doesn’t understand why Rita is doing this and wants her to settle down and have kids, which can be seen through the reference to him wanting her to “get off the pill.”…
