The South Wins This War
Now that I have lived in the south for two years, I have noticed some major differences between the North and the South. These are things anyone would notice but since I was born and raised in Illinois, and moved down to Alabama when I was seventeen, I took these changes a bit harder than an average tourist would. The biggest thing to get used to was the climate change. With the weather being so different the two areas find very different activities to participate in. Also, the two areas may only be a few hundred miles away from each other but the way northerners and southerners teach their children manners is very diverse.
Who knew weather could differ so much in just a few hundred miles? The weather in central Illinois is so much rainier than in southeast Alabama. Along with the rain comes extremely bad weather like tornadoes. Alabama may not have to worry about tornadoes as much as Illinois do but they make up for it by dealing with tropical depressions and hurricane after-math. However, the worst climate fault of the south is the humidity. It could be eighty degrees outside and it will feel like it is one hundred degrees. The summer is not the only time of year that has weather differences. The winter is more than likely the time of year that varies the most. Other than last year, southeast Alabama has not seen beautiful snow since 1994. However, central Illinois has always has the wonderful opportunity of experiencing an average snowfall of twenty-two inches per year. An Illinois winter also consists of sleet and ice. I do not even think Alabamians know what ice is other than to go in their drinks. Southerners do not know what real labor is until they have shoveled feet upon feet of snow in ten degree weather. The north may be tougher when it comes to below freezing temperatures but the south can stand the hottest and driest weather imaginable, especially during the summer months of... [continues]
