There is a difference between being overweight and being obese. The subject of obesity is of much concern to millions of people all over the world. It has also begun to be ranked as a serious risk comparable to certain diseases. In fact, some doctors even call obesity itself a disease. So what exactly is obesity and what do you need to know about it? Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent. Being obese means having so much body fat that your health is in danger. Having too much body fat can lead you to these type of health problems, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, sleep apnea, and stroke. The way you can find out if you are obese is by using a measurement called a body mass index, or BMI. The BMI is a combination of your height and weight, and if your BMI is of 30 or higher than you are considered obese. Obesity is from the Latin obesitas, which mean fat, plump, or stout. The Greek were the first to recognize obesity as a medical disorder. The cause of obesity can be a lot of reasons why. If your family members are obese, you may have inherited a tendency to gain weight. And your family also helps form your eating and lifestyle habits, which can lead to obesity. Also with our busy lives make it harder to plan and cook healthy meals. So therefore it is easier for us to get prepared meals, go out to eat, or go to the drive-through. But the only bad things about these foods are they often are high in fat and calories or portions are often too large. Things like work schedules, long commutes, and other commitments also cut into the time we have for physical activity. Another main cause is lack of energy balance, and this mean the energy in equals your energy out. The amount of calories you get from food and drinks is your energy in, and the energy your body uses for things like breathing, digesting, and being physically active is your energy out.
