fAn examination of the differences in Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson’s Spoken language?
Nigella Lawson and Gordon Ramsay, two very famous TV chefs, have completely different ways of presenting themselves verbally. Ramsay is well known for his fiery temper and for being extremely rude at times by using profanity. Nigella Lawson is renowned for her flirtatious manner of presenting, and is known as the “queen of food porn”; both of the transcripts I selected identify these characteristics.
Gordon Ramsay has often been criticised for his use of profanity on his TV programmes, for example Kitchen Nightmares USA, in 2010 where he was caught on camera swearing at Abby, who was the owner of a restaurant, calling her a “precious little b***h” and used f**k numerous times, he is known for his use of swear words; in a interview recently he was unaware of the extent of his swearing until he watched the episode after filming. On a recent show of Gordon’s Great British Nightmare, the guests took the total to 312 expletives, meaning one every 20 seconds. Nigella Lawson is known for using a different approach of presenting, she can be extremely sexual, she frequently engages in provocative behaviors like nibbling and licking when she is making meals for example in the transcript she says while cooking the devil food cake “ohh”, “mmm” and “beautiful isn’t it” when describing the “lush frosting” and the “beautiful dark cocoa”. These phrases show pleasure derived from the food but it is obvious that these sounds are similar to sounds of sexual pleasure.
The transcript also shows how Ramsay’s accent and where he is from affects the way he also speaks, in the transcript he says “’ave” and “summing” which can tell us about his socialect through the usage of these words. Gordon Ramsey is actually Scottish, but adopted a perfect Estuary accent when he moved to England, you can tell this by the way he speaks in the transcript as when he is talking he has an English accent....
