Dietary Supplements Report
In this paper, I will define dietary supplements. I will also describe some benefits of taking dietary supplements. I will describe some risks of taking dietary supplements. I will explain the government regulations surrounding dietary supplements. Finally, I will choose a health condition and I will discuss a condition-specific supplement used to treat and manage the aliment. I will also discuss the supplements implications, dosages, and risks for treating the condition. Dietary supplements are products intended for ingestion as supplements to the diet. Dietary supplements may contain vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanicals (Grosvenor, 2006). Dietary supplements can also carry plant-derived substances such as, amino acids, enzymes, concentrates or extracts (Grosvenor, 2006). One benefit of taking dietary supplements is that it can help people that are dieting to lose weight because people on a diet restrict their food intake and reduce their intake of micronutrients (Grosvenor, 2006). Another benefit of taking dietary supplements is that it can help vegans, because vegetarian diets are usually high in micronutrients but excludes all animal food products so a supplement for animal food products would help. Another benefit of taking dietary supplements is for women that are of age to have children, whether or not they are pregnant. It is best for these women to take folate and iron supplements (Grosvenor, 2006). Another benefit of taking dietary supplements is for older adults because capacity to absorb or utilize vitamins may decrease with aging (Grosvenor, 2006). Dietary supplements can also be good for people with certain conditions that effects what foods they can eat and people that take certain medications (Grosvenor, 2006). Lastly, dietary supplements can be good for people that smoke cigarettes or for people that consume alcohol (Grosvenor, 2006). One risk of taking...
