Documenting Antonio’s Journey from Boyhood to Manhood What the Book Says | What I Say | “It was custom to provide for the old and the sick.” (4)“The ways of men are strange and hard to learn.” (25)“We must all gather around our father, I heard myself say. His dream is to ride westward in search of new adventure. He builds highways that stretch into the sun, and we must travel that road with him… You are a Luna, they chanted in unison, you are to be a farmer-priest for your mother!” (26)“The day dawned, and already the time of youth was fleeing the house which the three giants of my dreams had built.” (27)“And that day I became part of their gang” (38) | Right away, we get a taste of the era and culture that Tony was living in. In modern days, a bad habit of sending elderlies to nurseries has formed, whereas in old Spanish cultures, the old were seen as wise and knowledgeable and were very respected. Tony’s mother is honored to have Ultima staying in her home. Here we see Ultima stating Tony’s journey throughout the book. He will be learning the ways of men… but in a more unusual and aggressive way than most boys. Tony’s mother and father have very different plans and dreams for Tony’s future. His mother desires for him to be a priest, while his father pushes him to follow his Marez blood and explore west. This comes to be a major struggle in Tony’s life as he tries to please his mother and his father for he loves them both very much. But Tony seems to be forgetting about the most important dream: his own.As Antonio gains more life experiences, especially witnessing a death firsthand, the stories and naive quality of his past start to disintegrate. He starts to see things for what they really are, which is often very unfun. Sure, while this might be a mark of becoming a man, it's not necessarily a joyful occasion. In fact, for Tony, the loss of innocence

Powers maximizes his control over these rhythms, over his story and how and when he wants his reader to hear it, through his poetic, lyrical style. He selects wisely from a literary inventory well beyond his years and develops his themes through images, sometimes fresh, sometimes recurring, that are perfect for what he is trying to convey. His images suggest a pursuit of knowledge of God, of higher meaning, of connection with nature, and of his war’s natural overlap with his understanding of all of these pursuits. And through his exploration, readers are treated to remarkable passages like this:…

This scene is very touching as the two characters drink wine and snack on mozzarella. "Let's forget everything, let's get drunk," says Antonio to his son. "We'll eat and be happy for now." Through the food, drinks, and cheerful songs, the two try to forget their problems of the day. This is a scene that everyone can relate to; when you are having a bad day or a bad time in your life, you want to go out and just forget, even if it's for a moment. Bruno keeps looking self consciously at a rich young boy dressed in black who sits near by. This young boy returns his glances with a snotty look. "Eat, eat, don't worry," Antonio says to his son. This scene demonstrates that even in childhood, it is hard to escape from the current conditions. As we saw in the earlier scenes, Bruno is responsible for many things at a very young age. He helps his father clean his bike, closes the window for the baby, and remembers to say goodbye to his mother. Bruno is a character of the middle class. He is not as hopeless as the two children panhandling on the street; one who receives a swift kick from Antonio's fellow employee. However Bruno is not as well off as the young boy at the restaurant. He is stuck in the middle, which is very frustrating because slipping into poverty seems so easy to do while becoming well off seems so far…

All these people imprint so many different ideologies onto Tony and he has no idea what to believe in. On the other hand, Tony feels at home with his peers, Cico and Samuel. Cico, however, has the focus in this book. He explains to Tony the idea of the Golden Carp. Cico regards Tony as an equal and a partner in learning. The Golden Carp that Cico talks about also represents something deep inside Tony. The Carp is a symbol of new knowledge and information about the world. With the Carp and Cico, it’s a new outlook on how the Universe works. Later that night, Tony dreams. Ultima appears in that dream, and she says ‘You have seen only parts’, Ultima in the dream is vocalizing her thoughts about Tony’s perspective, ‘and not looking beyond the great cycle that binds us all’(121). Keep in mind Tony is still incredibly young. La Grande is telling him that he needs to stop having this perspective of everything operating in black and white, and to see the bigger picture. Later in the next chapter, Ultima gives Tony a gift. She tells Tony, ‘You’re a good boy, now come here. I have something for you. The…

We first begin to see the feelings between the author and his mother at the end of the fourth paragraph of the story. Talking about his mother’s stories, he says “For now the sounds and pictures are my sounds and pictures. Her memory, my memory.” (Ardizzone, 117) You can tell from these sentences that Tony feels very connected to the memories that he shares with his mother.…

Another theme is that often times when not much is expected out of someone they set out to prove you wrong. This shows up in almost every instance. Doodle is not expected to live when he was born, but he lives. Most people think he would not be right in the head, but he is more than “right”, he is more intelligent than his brother in some ways. He…

When he is trying to deal with the right and wrong it requires a maturity and insight beyond his years. “You’re getting to be a man” Sartoris explains to his ten-year-old son after giving him a blow to the head. When Sartoris was growing up his world consisted of violence being the fundamental element when it came to manhood and sometimes that is all he knows because of growing up with his father. Sartoris is highly influenced by his father but also has a sense of justice in him too. While reading the story you get the sense of when Sartoris was growing up he didn’t have very much education he is a raw person, is much unformed with nature, and is not able to have stability in a permanent home. The scene of the de Spain house gives him an automatic feeling of peace and joy but as Faulkner comments; the child could not have state such a reaction into words. Later Sartoris reacts automatically again when he prevents his father from burning de Spain’s barn. He cannot expressive why he warns de Spain or ultimately runs away, but his actions suggest that Sartoris’s core consists of goodness and morality rather than the corruption that his father attempts to teach him. Sartoris sees through his father’s attempts to manipulate him by pushing on the importance of family loyalty as a means of guaranteeing Sartoris’s silence. At the end of…

Tony is different from Romeo. Because; he does not care what the public think of him or how he dresses. He was not born into a family of socialites, and does what he feels is right. He is not afraid of speaking his mind in front of people no matter who they are, but if he were to put down someone, he would not do it so openly. Tony does not fight unless he feels it is right or to avenge someone's death. Tony is also a respected member of the ‘Jets' gang because he was loyal and he founded the gang. At eighteen he is no longer a member because he feels he is too sensible for the gang.…
