“Jesus, you scared me! I wasn’t expecting you to be up at this hour.” “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I just couldn’t sleep. There are so many things on my mind!” Stephanie stood up from the rusty old chair while she cleaned the spilled milk on the table. “Yeah, I know. Today was just… awful! I can’t believe this happened! ” She sighed. “I had to leave work and all my students were so happy. Ironic, huh? How somebody’s happiness can be based on somebody else’s pain.” he said, trying to block all the memories of the day. “I know it’s not easy Gabriel! I was there remember? I was leaving Mary at school, when I got that dreaded call.” “And I also can’t believe you took her with you to the police station!” Gabriel said, accusingly. “What was I supposed to do?” she answered defensively. “I didn’t plan for this; I had nowhere to leave her!” Stephanie began to approach her husband, who was lost in his thoughts. “Poor kid, must be suffering as much as us.” He looked straight into Stephanie’s eyes and whispered, “I don’t know how to explain to her what happened, I don’t know what to say.” “She heard and saw enough today.” Stephanie said while resting her head on his shoulder, “I think she’s so strong and mature for her age.” “I wish I could say the same for her brother.
