MODULE 2 (ACTIVITY 1)
Good morning to madam Sivanes and to my dear classmates. I’m lavaniya and would like to share about a common disease among Malaysians which is diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period.Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many complications. Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure, foot ulcers and damage to the eyes.
Diabetes is due to either the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the cells of the body not responding properly to the insulin produced. There are three main types of diabetes mellitus:
Type 1 DM results from the body's failure to produce enough insulin. The cause is unknown.
Type 2 DM begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to respond to insulin properly. As the disease progresses a lack of insulin may also develop. The primary cause is excessive body weight not enough exercise, poor diet, stress, and urbanization.
Gestational diabetes, is the third main form and occurs when pregnant women without a previous history of diabetes develop a high blood glucose level resolves after the birth of the baby.
Congenital diabetes, which is due to genetic defects of insulin secretion and it strikes new born babies.
Today, I would share more regarding on damage to the eyes complications may faced by diabetic patients. Diabetic retinopathy damage to the retina which can eventually lead to blindness
It affects up to 80 percent of all patients who have diabetes for 10 years or more.
Diabetic retinopathy is the result of microvascular retinal changes. Thickens the basement membrane lead to incompetence of the vascular walls.
Small blood vessels – such as those in the eye – are especially vulnerable to poor blood sugar

Diabetic Retinopathy, which is loss of vision and blindness, happens when tiny blood vessels grow in the eye, and the high concentration of glucose in fluid that are around the eye makes them fragile. Tiny bulges can be developed in the retina and it can develop in other areas in the eye, and if they start to leak or burst, the fluid and blood can spread throughout the eye. After it starts spreading, blood clot and scar tissue can start to form in front of the retina, which prevents light from hitting the retina, causing blindness. If the fluid is released it can cause swelling which leads to blurred vision. There is no treatment when this occurs ,but the prevention of the build up of glucose surrounding the blood vessels in the eye and the…

If left untreated, over time, high blood glucose levels damages the kidneys’ filtering system and causing kidney failure requiring dialysis or kidney transplant. The main complication is cardiovascular problems, including coronary artery disease with angina, heart attack, stroke, narrowing of arteries (atherosclerosis) and high blood pressure. According to the American Heart Association the risk of stroke is two to four times higher for people with diabetes, and the death rate from heart disease is two to four times higher for people with diabetes than for people without the disease. Other complications if left untreated are chronic renal disease, osteoporosis, eye damage and hearing…

Type one diabetes is a life threatening disease with no cure known, but only treatment to help maintain a normal life. The exact origin of type one diabetes is not known and no known way to prevent the disease from occurring. Many signs are known to help catch the diabetes early on before it becomes life threatening. Some common symptoms are constant hunger, weight loss, increased thirst, and urinating frequently. Type two diabetes is also a life threatening disease but does not require as much attention as type one diabetes. The main cause is obesity and lack of exercise, which is the cause for the low supply of insulin in the body. Type two diabetes can be reversible with a balanced diet and exercise because type two is most commonly brought on from obesity at a more mature age. Most times the treatment can be just a healthy, planned diet, but some worse cases may have to inject insulin in their body frequently.…

Type 2 diabetes can be described a one of the most common forms of diabetes that exists today. It need to be understood that what happens to an individual when he suffers from type 2 diabetes is that he would not be able to produce enough insulin, which is needed for the body in order to be able to use sugar effectively, or perhaps his cells would ignore the insulin that his body is producing. It would help to remember the important fact that it is sugar that provides energy for the body, and unless the sugar is absorbed and taken in to the body and to the blood and thereafter to the cells by the insulin, the individual would suffer from glucose build up. This can be extremely dangerous for the person, who is stated to be suffering from the dreaded Type 2 diabetes. Two major problems are caused by the disorder: the cells may become starved for energy, as the energy is not processed in a proper manner. On the other hand, the higher levels of blood glucose may end up harming the internal organs of the person, causing great irreversible damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.
