Motorcycle sales show signs of recovery

Source: Mintel 30-01-2014

"There is strong evidence that the worst may be over for the motorcycle and scooter sector as the recent decline in sales begins to slow"
For more information please see Mintel's Motorcycles - UK - December 2013.

What We've Seen
New motorcycle registrations up in December 2013, October 2013 and September 2013 on the same periods in 2012.
An exit poll commissioned by Kawasaki showing almost half of visitors to its stand at 'Motorcycle Live' in November 2013 are ready to buy during the 2014 sales season.
An improvement in consumer sentiment and signs that people are ready to increase their spending.

Upturn in new motorcycle sales
New data released by the Motorcycle Industry Association in January 2014 show sales of new motorcycles for December 2013 were up 11.3% on the same period in 2012. The upturn in new registrations seen in December followed similar increases in October 2013 (+6.7%) and September (+8%) on the same periods a year earlier.

While the market for the year still ended down slightly on 2012, the rise in sales in the final quarter of 2013 suggests the market, which has been in freefall, has bottomed out and showing signs of recovery as the economy continues to pick up and consumers feel more secure about making big-ticket purchases.

Manufacturers shared optimism
The recent pick up in new motorcycle sales has resulted in renewed optimism for the year ahead among leading motorbike manufacturers. Nick Campolucci, Head of Honda Motorcycles UK, revealed at 'Motorcycle Live', the Motorcycle Industry Association's flagship show in November 2013, that sales volumes for Honda motorcycles in 2013 were 3.9% up on 2012. Moreover, he expected the launch of new models at the start of 2014 across the brand's range to strengthen buyers' interest. Honda UK's optimism was echoed by other leading manufacturers in the industry including Yamaha and

Upon reviewing the Competition Bikes Inc. (CBI) Budget Schedules and ProFormas for Year 9, there are a few concerns that should be analyzed. The first is the forecasted sales in units. The forecast for year 9 is 3,510 units, which is a 3.2% increase over the 3,400 units sold in year 8. The storyline mentions the economic downturn, which has led to a decrease in bike sales. It can take some time to recover sales lost during an economic downturn, and given that sales were down 15% between year 7 and year 8, to go from a 15% decrease in sales to a 3.2% increase in sales in the span of only two years may be an unrealistic goal. I would want to see a specific plan in place for how the company plans to accomplish this substantial increase in sales in such a challenging market (such as an increase in advertising budget, or R&D developing a new product feature that will help differentiate CBI’s bikes from the competition).…
