Good morning class today I’m going to tell you why you should learn a second language. Learning a second language can help you in many ways in this speech I will be telling you a number of reasons why you should learn a second language. If you decide to move to a different country or region, learning the local language will help you to communicate with the local community. Even if many of the locals speak your language, it's still worth the learning the local language. Doing so will demonstrate your interest in and commitment to the new country. Have you ever been frustrated that you can’t communicate with certain people because you can’t speak their language? If so, learning that language will help you to communicate with them. It can also give you a better understanding of their culture and their way of thinking. If possibly in the future you decide to go for a job that includes regular contact with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them. It may also help you to make sales and to negotiate and secure contracts. Knowledge of foreign languages may also increase your chances of finding a new job, getting a promotion, or of going on foreign business trips. In a business meeting, for example, knowing the foreigner’s language will put you in a great advantage as it will make them feel much more comfortable as using an interpreter can be quite awkward. In any socialising after the meetings, if you learn their language the locals will probably feel more comfortable using their own language rather than English. I don’t know about you but being bilingual seems like a very valuable thing to have. Another great thing about leaning a language is when you travel. Many English speakers seem to believe that wherever you go on holiday you can get by speaking English, so there's no point in learning any other languages. If people don't understand you all you have to do is speak slower and louder....
