Development of Corrections
Prepare a 200- to 300-word response to the following questions in a narrative form; commonly referred to as an essay. Just be certain to put it into the APA format please: Elizabeth Fry formed the Association for the Improvement of the Female Prisoners in Newgate in 1817 (page 32). She spent 30 years as an advocate for the separation of men and woman’s prisons. The woman’s prisons would be run by women, and took a woman’s needs into account. To this day female prisons are a lot like the male prisons now they have increased security, more training, and special housing to deal with the ones who are violent. The three arguments for juveniles being separated from the adult prisoners are: the penitentiary was too hard on juveniles; juveniles would learn bad habits from the older criminals and be embittered by the experience of confinement. Third adolescents could be reformed if they were diverted early enough into institution with others their age. I feel that if there were no distinctions between adult and juvenile prisons, the younger inmates would be taken advantage of because of their inability to take care of themselves. This would lead to them seeing life one way without the ability to seek rehabilitation. Corrections: The Fundamentals, by Burk Foster. Published by Prentice-Hall. This was neede i=since there was no money from the state to pay the guards, so each institution had to find the money someplace. The three federal laws that were enacted between 1929 and 1940 are Hawes- cooper act (1929); Ashurst- sumners act (1935), and the Sumners-Ashurst Act (1940) Corrections: The Fundamentals, by Burk Foster.
