Mark Askren - overview
We all want work to be a positive environment. Recruiting and retention are a challenge.
Our jobs are difficult because they are often viewed through the lens of negative events (email outage, security breach, etc.)… “milestone events.”
Demand for service is challenging as well. We are “enablers,” right in the middle of a huge demand for services.
The rate of change is another factor that affects our happiness.
Although these factors make it exciting, there is a lot of pressure and things can get tense.
Did anyone attend the Marcus Buckingham keynote a few years ago at Educause? As managers, each person can learn to be proficient. Each person’s greatest room for growth is in their strengths.
There is also the idea of “appreciative inquiry”
“Appreciative Inquiry is the study and exploration of what gives life to human systems when they function at their best. This approach to personal change and organization change is based on the assumption that questions and dialogue about strengths, successes, values, hopes and dreams are themselves transformational” (Diana Whitney and Amanda Trosten-Bloom, The Power of Appreciative Inquiry: A Practical Guide to Positive Change).
What is it about our department that is really strong? How can we develop it?
Is upper leadership part of the solution or part of the problem?
What do you do in your day-to-day operations that is strong? That is your reality.
UC Irvine – We spend time to survey our customers and survey our workers. Where are we in terms of innovation? … in terms of dedication?
Get beyond obstacles / negativity and focus on being positive in the day-to-day existence.
