EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In Kenyan schools curricula, there is concern that there is lack clear and concrete strategy to develop EE. The slow pace of conceptualizing Environmental Education (EE) to entail development, ecological and social concerns, is also attributed to the lack of this strategy. In spite of UN conference on Environment and Development issues in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, where governments committed themselves to integrate the concepts of environmental awareness and sustainable development in the informal and formal education sectors, Kenya is yet to come up with a relevant strategy to help realize fully, the commitment in formal education. The challenges facing Kenya today have occasioned the need of re-orienting education and training of people on the environmental and development issues. This report is therefore aimed at Kenya Institute of Education (KIE) to propose a strategy for integrating environmental education (EE) in the Kenyan schools curriculum, directed to the Kenya Institute of Education, the national curriculum developer. The introduction part is aimed at the course tutor, for the purpose of meeting the academic requirement of the course. The various EE programmes by different organizations in Kenya were reviewed. In particular, AFEW’s EE, WCK’s EE, KWS’s EE programmes and the FEE’s Eco-school programmes. A whole school approach was settled upon as the most suitable for the Kenyan context. The report has recommended curricula review; integrating indigenous knowledge into the curricula; EE material development; retraining of the serving teachers; review of teacher training college and university curricula to capture EE.
