Descriptive Essay: Who I Am
Amanda Rae Argueta
Descriptive Essay I am every bit the teenager that thinks she’s unique, and every bit the young-adult that many rely on. I have my Father’s creative mind and my Mother’s rollercoaster emotions. Although my traits come from someone somewhere, when they combine I am every bit unique in my own little ways. I excel in many creative and artistic things like my dad. We work well with our hands in creating, building, and even fixing things. We can build model cars in under an hour, fix and engine in a day, and can draw almost anything that comes to our minds. I am so much like him that the infamous saying “You’re just like your father” is said one too many times, especially for an 18 year old girl. But just as I get my creative side from him, I also get my love to argue and be in a debate. Many say opposites attract, but on the other hand, those who are too much alike repel and tend to butt heads. Well that is basically me and my dad. Although we are very much alike with our mannerisms, we differ in the way we view things. This is usually how our arguments begin. I generally get my views from my mom. From my mom I get my roller coaster emotions. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and are quick to retreat from confrontations. The smallest thing can make us cry, like the death of a character on our favorite television show. Also the smallest thing can send us off the edge, like my brother’s inability to be kind. We have the ability to take the silliest situation and blow it way out of proportion. But these combined create the person I am today. With their traits combined in me plus my little touch of being an oddball create the uniqueness of Amanda Rae Argueta. I can’t have one trait without the other. My emotions given to me by my mother depict the talent at the given time given to me by my father. Let me explain, when I’m angry is usually when you can find my knocking off math questions from my Calculus homework. Or when I’m sad I do my crafts like making bracelets for friends or drawing abstract pieces. I even sometimes write poems that even I doubt I wrote. The only downfall with this is I am never sad for an extreme amount of time so most of my projects are pushed to the back burner. Sometimes for days, weeks, or years, sometimes forever. In my happiness and complete bliss is when who I am comes to the surface. I am the nerdy geek of the family that reads novels for fun and plays MMORPGs like my life depended on it. When I’m happy my own little trait comes out. That’s usually when my dad accuses me of being the Mailman’s kid. Which is funny because for as long as I’ve known it’s been a Mailwoman. In the end, I may be my father’s kid some days, or my mother’s the others, and the Mailman’s kid in between days, neither of my parents can deny me as theirs. I am a creative genius with an emotional problem, but there is always that little twist of me.

Identity is something human beings hold dear. Humans are very complex beings and it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes up who a person is or can be. Now, the most common generalizations as to what makes up an identity are: personality, likes, dislikes, experience(s), religion, soul, memories and beliefs. A physical form isn’t mentioned; because the body is a temporary thing. A body doesn’t necessarily mean that it is part of the identity since; what will last forever in not the body but the impact left by personality or ideas, for they are everlasting.…

I could not begin to describe the odd characteristics I possess, but when asking my peers they told me that I was somehow strangely unique. I was never that girl who stood in with the “in” crowd nor did I ever seem like the type that stood by myself, I was in any case just me. Growing up I never really ever fashioned myself as being in any group but I could talk to almost anybody. Kids back then did not see in color. I am an African American student, according to everyone else I “marched to the beat of my own drum” but again to me I was just Jasmine. I came from an abusive home, I never really had much clothes but I did what I could to make it work, and I loved sports, it’s how I expressed myself and released frustration. As my generation grew older I noticed people I once could talk to didn’t. They began to look at me different and strange, it took me some time to realize what they were doing was natural to them because the human mind tends to gravitate to things it is use to; instead of thinking in black and white they finally saw color, as I was forced to come to the realization of when I was young. I still trudged on, known as an outcast but still one that kids looked up to. I believed in myself my rights and my dreams and I am determined to make them come true. By the grace of God, he has now moved obstacle’s and people out of my way to let me succeed in life. Not letting anyone tell me otherwise I stood up for myself, and I would never take no for an answer. As stubborn as I am, I am a true friend, a lover of all things, and a genuinely caring person. I’m the girl you would never guess enjoys country music and wearing her boots on a Friday night, the girl that could make just about anyone laugh, the girl who is wildly passionate on any given subject, the girl that goes to sleep at 3o clock in the morning finishing homework after getting…

There is an unfortunate reality in that there are millions of people around the world who are willing to do almost anything, even lose themselves, just so they can be accepted and become part of the crowd. To keep things in perspective, wanting to be accepted, wanting to fit in is not exactly a bad thing. In fact, it’s basic human nature for survival and social growth, and it starts at a very young age. During our developmental years, we feel the need to be accepted or be worthy of acceptance. This can’t be met when you are isolated, other people have to be involved if these needs are to be met.…

In my life, people think they know me but can only graze the surface of my actuality. They only see the level one part of me, the way I behave, and more often than not, they see the reserved, self-restrictive, and industrious personality I carry daily. If they perceive me only for my level one personality, they completely miss the deep level three part of me, the never-ending well, the reef, the reality of who I am, the very values, experiences, fears, and virtues that actually constitute me for who I am.…

I often wonder when I am stuck in my thoughts. Like feeling like the cement is taking over your body. Why I am me, and I do the things I do and I say the things I say. And then I wonder if it is a paradox or something we truly don’t find out until we get older until we have many experiences and learn not to do things and we go through some hard things and some happy and some sad and we regret. We wish we could take back things we said we wish we could be someone were not. We think the thunderstorms, rain showers that are going on inside of our heads are merely just nonexistent we care too much but yet we don’t care about the things that we should. We wish we could be everything were not. It’s almost as if us as humans like we are designed like…

Since I was young, I have had a desire to help others who were in need. I was always keen on learning about the framework of society. I was enthralled by figuring out why people do the things they do, what drives them. Throughout my life, this desire to help people stayed with me. First, it was through informal sessions of friends in high school needing a listening, non-judgmental, shoulder to cry on. As a child I wanted to pursue a career as a dentist and to help people understand the importance of dental hygiene. I attended Mansfield University for a year after I graduated high school where I lived on campus, met new people and no parents to be in my business. Classes became secondary and hanging out was primary. I received my freshman year grades and was in awe because I knew that I was not taking it seriously. Needless to say, I took a few years off of schooling. I then worked for several companies that ranged from customer service to debt collecting to restaurant hospitality. The money was good at the time but I started to realize that I wanted more out of life, and wanted to further my education. I went back to Mansfield University in 2008. This is when I felt the pull of psychology and change majors. I later came to think of this decision as a revolutionary step that turned my attention to what I now am determined to make a calling, and a profession, for a lifetime, for my lifetime. I knew what I wanted to do, but, I still had the dilemma of applying my full self. Even after the time off, I found it hard to focus on school work as much as I should have. All these classes were showing me how to help others, when really, I needed to help myself. I had a few life lessons to learn, and personal issues to understand before I could devote myself to anything.…

Have you ever listened to music? If you have, you know what it’s like to feel the drum beat, to identify the instruments, and to pick a favorite genre. My life is like music, it’s sometimes slow and smooth, and sometimes it’s loud and sloppy. Music on a page looks like lines and scribbles. It looks like instruments. It feels like wood, plastic, or metal. It sounds like rock, pop, hip hop, rap, country, techno, and even classical. It’s the sound of a squeak of an instrument, the beat of a drum, or the crash of a cymbal.…

The vast expanse of blue seems to be as endless as far as the eye can see. Its unique sounds, gorgeous views, and unparalleled symbolism provide comfort in times of distress; this place is the definition of tranquility. The drive there is filled with unaltered excitement and exuberance, whereas the journey home is always a somber one. Anticipating the first views of the line of blue-white water fills me with hopefulness. Something changes when the sound of the waves hits the ear, whether they are wildly crashing against the helpless shore or lazily rolling across the feet of all who seek the magic of the water.…

I take my first step and duck my head into the too small plane. My nerves start to electrify as the realization sinks in that I am going to be in a different country in less than two hours. The minutes seem to drag on and on as I listen to the guy next to you snoring and the kid behind me kicks the back of my chair. The pilots' rough voice comes on the intercom and says "Howdy folks, just wanna let you know that we are getting ready to land and we should be there in about ten short minutes.". Then I listen carefully, but don't understand anything the Mexican lady is saying. Ten minutes go by and I hear the screeching and squealing of the airplane's tires as they hit the Mexican runway. I feel as if I've spent decades waiting for this moment and I can't believe that its finally here.…

Personally, I am a cross between my mother and father, and it shows greatly. I like to do construction and hand work, which is a skill that comes from both parents, I am creative like my mother; and smart like both of my parents. There is a quote that says: “Mothers are angels who teach their kids to fly”. I truly think that mothers are angels. Although, I always thought that mothers were sent to this world to be mean with their kid specially in their adolescent years when we would rather go to a party with our friends instead of cleaning our rooms or reading books. Despite that mothers are known for being ''super women.'' What makes a mother so special?…

My primary school was SJK(C) Kepong 2 and I finished my secondary school in SMK St Mary which is a girl school. After graduated, I continued my study of Form 6 in SMK Kepong Baru because my secondary school does not provide tertiary level of education. The reason I study Form 6 is because I wanted to become a veterinarian. But, there is only two local universities providing this course in Malaysia and is too burden for my family if I pursue this course at overseas. Therefore, the only choice for me to get into local university is to study Form 6. Although Form 6 is really tough, but I have never regret of pursuing Form 6 because I gained and learnt much more knowledge than other people.…
