Descriptive Essay: Three Sandwhiches
Ever get so hungry that you just want something quick and easy to eat? I know I do. One of my favorite things to get when I am feeling like I’m starving and can’t wait any longer to eat is a sandwich. But I don’t always choose the same kind of sandwich. Sometimes I may feel like eating a bologna sandwich, and other times I may decide to make a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. When I am not in the mood for one of those sandwiches, I may choose to make a sandwich that I like to call a grilled “triple cheese” sandwich; my own twist on the classic grilled cheese. Most generally if I am really hungry, and I am in a hurry to go somewhere, I would grab a bologna sandwich. When I make it I start out with two pieces of bread, fresh from the grocery store. Then I add two pieces of bologna with Heinz Ketchup and French’s Mustard in the middle. There’s really not an easier meal. Mostly because it doesn’t require any cooking skills at all; and it doesn’t dirty any dishes. Sometimes when I am something hot to eat, I may make myself a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. The sound and sight of two pieces of bread sizzling in a hot skillet, and watching as the cheese melts and surrounds little slices of salty ham, is enough to make anyone’s mouth water. The great thing about this sandwich is that I can eat it with just about any kind of chip: whether it be salty potato chips, or cheesy nacho chips. Last, but not least, a sandwich that I came up with on my own. I was in the kitchen and really wanted a grilled cheese sandwich, but there was one problem. There wasn’t enough American cheese. As I looked through the drawers of the refrigerator, I managed to find a package of Pepper jack and a package of Swiss. Not able to decide on which one to make a sandwich with, I decided to use all three. Not knowing how it would turn out, I reluctantly took my first bite and soon realized that I had made one of the most delicious sandwiches I had ever tasted. The good thing that I’ve

“Natural favor. That ingredient helps to explain not only why the fries taste so good, but why most fast food- indeed, most of the food Americans eat today- taste the way it does.” (Schlosser, 120) Schlosser explains. Just about every food Americans own, whether it be chicken nuggets, potato chips, or ice cream, contains artificial flavoring. International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) is the world’s largest flavor company. It flavors just about everything, including toothpaste, bread, breakfast cereals, and popular soft drinks. “In addition to being the world’s largest flavor company, IFF manufactures the smell of six of the ten best-selling fine perfumes in the United States” (Schlosser, 122). The flavors made here are most likely in that “fresh” cheeseburger that the customer scarfed down, along with the fries and the shake or fountain drink that both contain artificial flavoring as well. With this being said, it may seem like…

When the bread was done, I cut thin slices of the cheese which I then layered on both pieces of bread. I patiently waited as the cheese melted before my eyes and then combined the two halves. I pressed the sandwich even more until the cheese oozed out. I would not describe myself as a patient person, but I waited patiently until I was positive that it was perfect.…

For better or for worse, consumers seem to be eating less sliced bread. Sandwich bread still represents the biggest seller in the category; however, it also had the greatest loss in unit volume sales of any other segment in the bread aisle from 2006 to 2011, according to market research firm SymphonyIRI, Chicago, IL. Consumers appear to want something different, and tortillas and flatbread producers expect to fill that gap.“Generally speaking, from what I see, the bread market is declining in terms of soft breads because of all these other varieties,” said Jerry Chizick, vice-president and general manager, Handi Foods, Weston, ON, which manufactures flatbreads, bagels, thin buns, pitas, crackers, crisps and double-baked pita chips. This year, SymphonyIRI reported increased dollar sales for tortillas despite declining unit sales. Although tortillas are experiencing price increases this year similar to those impacting packaged bread, the category saw consistent dollar sales growth from 2006 to 2010. Tortillas and flatbreads have become mainstream in restaurants as consumers readily accept them as an alternative to conventional menu items. In 2006, McDonald’s introduced a snack wrap, a reinvention of its popular sandwiches with a tortilla instead of a bun. In 2008, Subway started offering flatbreads as an alternative to its freshly baked rolls. Today, flatbreads can be found on most casual and fine dining menus as well as a host of other establishments throughout the food service industry. As consumers try to reduce their caloric intake, they often turn to flatbreads, which generally have fewer calories and carbs because of their inherently thinner profile than their sliced-loaf counterparts. Flatbreads’ more malleable…
