It was a hot muggy afternoon during the early season of fall. The wind was strong that day, the force blowing against my hair causing it to rise and fall as the wind came and left without warning. I could feel the sun beating down upon my back, causing my body to fight against the heat to stay cool. The constant sound of voices ring in my ears and throb my forehead. I was at the picnic table outside the bridge of Bryant place, and it was the most busy and uncomfortable place on campus at that time. Many people would think being outside in West Virginia would be peaceful and relaxing; however, this is a loud, busy college campus. The repeating sound of my peers talking, yelling, or singing is distracting from my focus. As I glance around this uncomfortable, rough seated picnic table, the soft song of a violin rings through my ears and into my heart. Little did I notice before, a shoulder length, blonde hair young girl was showing off her inspirational talent on her new violin. The notes of the song flew through the air as a dandelion in the summer. Ambulance sirens screeched through my ears suddenly. The pain I experience when I hear ambulances is breathtaking. The fact a child, a mother, a husband or someone’s sister could be in trouble lingers in my head as the sirens rush through town. Noises can motivate your brain to think back to the good or bad memories of your past times.
As many states, West Virginia citizens smoke cigarettes. I sit on this wood splinter table and the smell of cigarettes inhales through my nose. Noticing most college students smoke the tobacco filled cigarette, I usually leave the table when I feel the turn in my stomach and the headache rushes through my skull. A worker from Aladdin's at the Falcon Center carefully stepped down the steep high steps. She held a foil covered dish plate. The smell of pizza blocked the smell of cigarettes for one moment. The smell of

What’s better to chill out a hot summer’s day than something sweet and cool? No, I am not talking about a Popsicle. I am not talking about an ice cream cone, either. I am not even talking about iced tea or lemonade. It is something better than all of those, and it doesn’t even have all the sneaky calories of those other tasty treats! The answer to the question is simple. Have you guessed it? It is a cherry.…

At one-thirty in the afternoon, Carolee Mitchell was running the vacuum cleaner, or she would have heard the first sirens and looked out. After the first, there weren’t any others. The calling voices, even the number of dogs barking, could have been students on their way back to school, high-spirited in the bright, cold earliness of the year. Thinking back on the sounds, Carolee remembered a number of car doors being slammed, that swallow of air and report which made her smooth her hair automatically even if she wasn’t expecting anyone. But what caught her eye finally was what…

It was a cold, bitter October morning. The day had started off like most other, five a.m coffee and a lifeless bowl of buttermilk oatmeal. It would be soon that I slug into my 2005 Honda Civic and drive off to my final dreaded destanation, Maddy Austin Jake Bricker Middle School. As I dragged out of my car I was greeted by several students in which I gave a polite wave and hurried into my classroom which was buried deep into the middle school’s basement , nearly spilling my cheap 25 cent coffee. Just from the outcomes of my morning I could tell this was going to be a long regretful day.…

At West Virginia University, a proposal to ban smoking on campuses has been made. As with any new ban, there will be some controversy, however, smoking bans have become more and more popular in the recent years. West Virginia University and other Universities have a right to ban smoking because they must protect the rights of their non-smoking student’s health (Fortin, 2007). As of 2011, over 500 college campuses across the country have eliminated smokers, creating a better and healthier environment and even reducing the number of smokers (Steinberg, 2011). “Since a smoking ban was implanted on campus at Michigan State University, more students sought assistance in quitting (USA Today, 2011). If people wish to do harm to their bodies by using such a destructive substance, they should be forced to do so in an area far from others who do not wish to inhale these chemical toxins. “Comprehensive smoking bans can reduce secondhand smoke exposure among nonsmokers” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007). By banning smoking on WVU campuses, students will be breathing cleaner, fresher air and will not have to worry about what might be poisoning their air.…

As my mother dropped me off at school, like all mothers do with providing me with the typical mother speech about behave in school, come home right after school, and let the dogs out. I get out the car and ran across the school parking lot for my morning Reading and English class in the downpour of rain now. I made it to class on time, but I was soaked from the rain. During this class period, the teacher was providing us an over view for our reading assignment before we were scheduled to go to lunch. That day, another classmate and I was next to the multi-window structured wall that provided the only natural light in the room and the register was blowing out heat. I was sitting there listening to the teacher, but I was distracted by the rain pounding on the windows and noticed how hard the rain was coming down outside. I looked outside and you could not see more than foot in front of you. At that moment, I remember looking down at the ground to see how much water was on the ground and a bird was trying to fly by the window. But, the bird was being pushed to the ground due to the pressure from the rain. Then the teacher said, “We are going to hold off going to lunch for a moment until the rain let’s up.” I look back know and remember the teacher’s facial expression that grew from a very calm person to pure panic in her eyes in a split second, this unexpected change describe for individuals under the nine common stressors by our co-authors. The teacher eyes got wide as softballs and she started shaking, then yells out “Everyone get on the floor now!” I had barely enough time to hit the floor before I heard a large sound like a locomotive coming and then a huge explosion going off. The wall of windows exploded and I felt myself being pushed across the floor by the force of the tornado and the table hit me on top my head,…

Everything was loud. The overstuffed bus of children was leaving the school parking lot for its normal route of sudden stops, unforgiving bumps, and of course, transporting students to their destinations. Opposite from every other child on the bus, I sit quietly in seat fourteen listening to the screaming laughter and shrill excitement of the conclusion of another school year. I sit there in silence because I knew that it would be my last bus ride home. I was trying to take everything in: the smell of the old brown bus seats, the half opened windows that tried to keep us cool, the pleasantly plump and incredibly sweet bus driver, and the jovial and rambunctious sounds of kids cackling and yelping. At every stop, I could literally feel my heart drop a little. As the bus neared my neighborhood, my mouth was completely dry. When I saw my house, my heart stopped. There was the moving truck. It was symbol of my leaving home, and the realization that the move was going to happen, and that I had no control over it.…

In 2000 the idea of smoking ban laws was in action. The three venues of a bar, restaurant, and workplace were chosen because they are the major source for second hand smoke exposer for non-smoking employees and public. States around the United States were debating whether they should ban smoking in public areas. “Before Delaware passed its smoke-free law in 2002, no state had adopted a comprehensive law making private workplaces, restaurants, and bars smoke-free” (“State Smoke-Free Laws for Worksites, Restaurants, and Bars --- United States, 2000”).…

“When you smoke herb, it reveals yourself to you,” is a famous quote of the pothead and marvelous musician Bob Marley. He felt as though marijuana helped tune in with your inner being. I believe cannabis that cannabis does this too and therefore have become a habitual marijuana consumer. Being in tune with ones inner being is important, yet not the reason that I smoke cannabis. The cannabis plant is beautiful, from the leaf to the buds you smoke. I love the ‘highs’ from smoking marijuana, and last but not least, I love how I can function while ‘high’. The summary is that little nuggets of joy have been crucial in making me who I am now, and I am grateful for everything marijuana has brought.…
