Describe what happens in an infant baptism
Baptism is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. People get baptised to show they belong to the Christian faith. They promise that they will try to live in a Christian way. Usually it is a baby getting baptised. Obviously a baby can't make any promises, so the parents and God-parents make the promises for the baby.

When a baby is baptised it wears white. Long ago, new Christians were given a white garment to wear as a sign of their new life. White stands for purity and innocence and the rejection of sin (doing wrong things). The priest welcomes the child and the parents at the door of the church. In each Catholic Church is a great paschal candle, which stands for the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world", so the candle is a symbol of this. With light we see things clearly. Jesus was talking about showing the difference between right and wrong, good and evil. In the baptism, a candle is given to one of the parents or God parents who lights it from the great paschal candle. The candle is a sign of how they hope the child will always try to live the way the Jesus would want. At the door, the priest asks the parents and God-parents if they are willing to bring up the child as a Christian. When they say 'Yes' the priest welcomes and names the child and says:

"I claim you for Christ our Saviour by the Sign of his Cross".

The priest then traces the sign of the cross on the child's forehead and the parents and God-parents do the same. The sign of the cross is a symbol that the child now belongs to God. The people then enter into the church. There is then a short reading form the Bible. The priest explains what it is about. Then there will be prayers. The prayers will be for the baby and for the parents and God-parents to help them in their job of bringing up the child. The priest anoints the child on the chest with the oil of catechumens. Think of a wrestler or body-builder; they sometimes

Baptism may occur at any point in a person's life, but Roman Catholics believe that the sacrament of baptism is extremely important and should be performed as soon as possible following the birth of a child. For Presbyterians baptism is an initiation into the church community as ordered by Christ. When a person is baptised, their sin, both personal and original, is removed. Water is used during baptism as a sign of cleansing and growth. Roman Catholic churches usually include a Baptismal Font, if it is an Anglican Church it will probably be at the back of the church near the West door. This is symbolic as through the pouring of the water, the child is freed from original sin and receives the Holy Spirit. As stated in the bible, "I baptise you in the name of the father...son...and the Holy Spirit." (Matt 28:18-20) This rite has a historical connection between past and present for all Christians, since Jesus was baptised, so are we. Thus establishing a vertical connection.…

However, according to the tract, “Are Roman Catholics Christian?”, the baptism of infants is not. Chick goes on to explain how infant baptism is not a viable means of salvation. Nowhere in the Bible does it state that baptizing infants is an adequate way of bringing new members into the faith. Being a Fundamentalist, Jack T. Chick takes the Bible literally. This leaves little to no room for interpretation of the written text on the Bible’s pages. Baptism is for the believers in Christ. How can an infant, unable to reason, believe in Him? Acts 8:35-38 is an account of, what seems to be, a rational man, wanting to be baptized after learning of the Good News about Jesus. Once he had learned about Christ, the man, Philip, was able to decide for himself that he desired…

The pastor recities many rituals which everyday people like myself cannot understand. These rituals are a sign of the infant being induced into the Orthodox faith. After the rituals are complete, the pastor along with one of the parents proceeds to dunk the infant in the cold holy water that has also been blessed by the pastor. At this time, the infant begins to cry hysterically, but it is a process that has to be done in order to be inducted into the Orthodox faith.…

Abstract Baptism, associated greatly with the Christian religion, did not originate with John the Baptist as many would assume from well-known Bible stories. Jesus ' time, the washing of almost anything was considered as a way of cleansing and purifying to rid of sin or to make clean. Rituals and Practices are very important in Full Gospel Baptist Churches. So many things revolve around these simple but important rituals. Over thousands of years Baptism has been a tradition in the Church and Christian communities all over the world. Most rituals are performed in a church of choice by a priest who has been…

Baptism is one example of how God wants his children to live by his example. It is apparent, as written by Frank C. Quinn, that we must “fully incorporate into the body of Christ through water and Spirit (Quinn 2). If further evidence is required to represent the importance of baptism, the entire New Testament can be used as a tool for research. Not more than three chapters into Matthew, the first book of the New Testament, John the Baptist baptizes Jesus in the Jordan. “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him” (Matt. 3.13). One does not need to search hard to find any of the examples Jesus lays out for his foundation. The New Testament itself is a representation of the foundation Christ lays. Thus it is plain that in the New Testament the grace of the Spirit is fundamentally linked with the identity of Jesus Christ (Dragas 150). Questions arise in this matter as they do in any matter. Dragas addresses this issue saying, “but why is He Christ?” (150). He answers this question with scripture: “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit” (John…

Baptism was a healing ritual for Indians and Christians. “Indians understood the baptismal ritual as physically curative. Jesuits similarly expected miraculous recovery to accompany baptism”.vi It is important to remember that John the Baptist baptized Jesus so that He could indentify with sinners. His baptism symbolizes the first “into the righteousness of Christ, dying with Him and rising free from sin in order to walk in the newness of life”vii. It is significant to note that scholars argue over whether or not Jesus actually baptized anyone. Most think that he never did, because our sacrament of baptism commemorates the death and resurrection of…

Why did I get baptized? The answer to that was simple; everyone else in my family were already Christian so I might as well follow their lead. I lived for six years after that not knowing the true meaning behind being a Christian. I was constantly angry and hurt and heart-broken and filled with lust and the list goes on... and on… I was poor but God provided; I was weak but God made me strong; I was broken but God mended my broken pieces, and through all this, I knew it had to be God because I could not make it through those rough,…

A sacrament is a tangible connection between Heaven and Earth along with how God's love and essence is physically here on Earth. Jesus Christ is the essence of God on Earth in human form. He preaches the ideas and serves as the son of God to his kingdom. When people preach, serve, and worship, God's power is present and the people remember what Jesus was all about when he was on Earth and therefore what God was all about. The concept of God is spread through ideas like the Pentecost, Paul and his conversion, and even in the catacombs of Rome.…

Birth is one of the most significant events for Hindus. In some families, the father performs a ceremony immediately after the birth. He dips a gold pen into a jar of honey and writes the sacred Sanskrit symbol: “Om” onto the infant's tongue. The symbol, which stands for truth, is written in hope that the child will be honest and speak only the truth, which is sweet as honey. After a little more than a week, the baby's name is formally given. Usually the name of a favorite god or goddess is chosen and whispered into the child's ear for three times. If the baby is a girl, then within a few weeks, the baby girl has an ear-piercing ceremony. Both boys and girls have their hair cut, symbolic of renewal and the shedding of wrongdoing in past lives. Overall, in common, a birth of a baby is the most beautiful thing. A birth of a baby is considered as a rite of passage because it changes the life of the family. They bring such joy and happiness to the family.…

It is a question that is more frequently asked by people of other faith backgrounds. Dr. Anderson’s lecture echoes such question “Is baptism really needed?” The idea of Baptism is based on the concept of prevenient grace. The term “prevenient grace” is a Latin word prae that means “before,” and venire that means “to come.” Though Stookey points out that the prevenient grace is there before as ask for it, he makes the case that “God does not wait for us to request help or even to know that we need it.” (46) On a similar note, Dr.Anderson’s question “If prevenient grace is there, why do we need the ritual?” gives way to another discussion of the connection between baptism and prevenient grace.…

It is usually held on the twelfth day of the child's birth, though, according to one convention, it can be held on any day after the tenth day, and before the first birthday. The twelfth day is also when the child's horoscope is formally drawn up. The first ten days after birth are considered an 'impure' time for the mother and child. On the twelfth day, the mother and child are given a ritual bath. The mother swathes the baby in a piece of new cloth, applies kajal to its eyes, and makes a little beauty mark on the…
