On September 27, 2007 the actor George Clooney from films Ocean 11, Burn after reading, and Men who stare at Goats was taken to a New Jersey Hospital. He was taken along with his girlfriend Sarah Larson as the result of a motorcycle accident.
On October 10th 2007 after an internal hospital investigation it was decided. Twenty seven hospital employees would be suspended for a month without pay for privacy violations. The employees had given information to the media regarding Mr. Clooney’s medical condition. Mr. Clooney who is used to personal invasions of his privacy was not concerned. He even asked the hospital to not have the employees punished.
What did these employees do that was so wrong? After all he is George Clooney the movie star. Why did the hospital wish to see their staff punished if George Clooney did not? What reasons did they have for suspending 27 staff for a month? Hospital spokeswoman Eurice Rojas said “accessing a person’s medical records without permission is a violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act a federal law that protects the privacy of patients.
As it turns out the hospital was required to address the breach of Mr. Clooney’s privacy. It is not agreed upon that the punishment was not severe enough. The hospitals spokesmen stated that “its physicians and employees, adheres to a strong code of ethics that respect the privacy and confidentiality of all of our patients”. It is continued “our commitment is to always conduct our behavior in the highest possible standards and any conduct that violates the trust of our patients and high standards we set is taken very seriously and treated in a very serious manner.”...
