Not every person in this world is living their life everyday full of joy and happiness. There are times where we feel like we cannot handle the challenges of everyday life but we eventually learn to overcome them. Unfortunately there are those who have a difficult time overcoming them and spend the rest of their life struggling to do so. For instance depression, a common mood disorder, that according to the National Institute of Mental Health ,affects 1 in 10 American adults or approximately 21 million people each year.(Smith 2007) Depression is characterized as a feeling worthlessness and sadness. There are many factors that cause a person to feel depressed such as life events or changes, a recent loss, failure to succeed etc… But there is more to it than that. There are many types of depression and each type a distinct sign and treatment.. We can say we are feeling depressed but that feeling will only last for short period of time. Unfortunately for those who suffer from more severe cases of depression struggle each day to live a normal happy life.
The actual cause of depression in unknown but there are a few factors that researchers have come up with that may produce depression in people. One factor being biochemical. Researchers have done studies and found that those who suffer from depression have a hormonal and chemical imbalance in their brain. There are many areas of the brain that have different functions and the area that is involved with mood and memory a lacking neurotransmitters. A shortage of neurotransmitters in the brain, indicates a lack of communication to that specific area in this case mood and memory. Therefore those with depression have the inability to fight the feeling of depression. Another factor is genetics which means it runs in the family.
