My CD shows the theme of denial of individuality of a group by an oppressor and the individual’s denial of self in response to the oppression. One example of this is “The Ugly-Girl Papers” which argues that women have to jump through hoops by committing to diets and treatments to increase her “value as a woman” and to “be pleased with herself. Another example of how individuality was denied was doctors telling women they are not sick but rather nervous and suffering a breakdown. An example of this is the narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” being put into and limited to a vacation house for months to get air for her fits instead of being treated for being sick. A last example shows the individuality that is denied by the oppressor. In “When I Was a Boy”, Dar Williams speaks to living a life she wants to when she rides a bike topless, knows all the tricks a boy does, fights, flies, and climb trees. Unfortunately the women who were being shown as oppressed in the readings didn’t live as self-fulfilling as a life as her.

“Sound of Settling” uses upbeat tempos in contrast with lyrics speaking to “settling” to show how people are upset at individuality being denied. Examples of this being shown in the lyrics are “I’ve got a hunger, twisting my stomach into knots…. this is the sound of settling”

“Can’t Tell Me Nothing” shows the man’s perspective. The man in this case is the oppressor. As the refrain says, “You can’t tell me nothing”. The man is superior and doesn’t have to listen to women and actually dictates what shall be done. One example of this is women being sick, men said they were nothing but “nervous”.

“Put Your Records On” shows the hidden individuality of the women being oppressed. This can primarily be seen in the refrain; “Girl put your records on, tell me your favorite song, go ahead let your hair down”. The refrain gives a feeling of relaxation in an environment free of oppression, which allows individuality to surface.

“A lack of color” illustrates a woman’s perspective on the environment they are trapped in. An example is in the first stanza where the singer tells how his brain sees her upside down and in the final stanza where he says he should have given her a reason to stay. This shows how the woman is saddened to the point of leaving. This can be related to the sterile, boring lifestyle shown in “The Yellow Wallpaper”

LYRICS

Sound of Settling

I’ve got a hunger
Twisting my stomach into knots
That my tongue was tied off

My brain’s repeating
“if you’ve got an impulse let it out”
But they never make it past my mouth,

Baa Bah, this is the sound of settling
Baa Bah, baa bah
[x2]

Our youth is fleeting
Old age is just around the bend
And I can’t wait to go grey

And I’ll sit and wonder
Of every love that could’ve been
If I’d only thought of something charming to say

Baa Bah, this is the sound of settling
Baa bah, baa bah
[x4]

I’ve got a hunger twisting my stomach into knots

CAN’T TELL ME NOTHING

La la la la
Wait ‘til I get my money right

I had a dream I could buy my way to heaven
When I woke I spent that on a necklace
I told God I’d be back in a second
Man, it’s so hard not to act reckless

To whom much is given much is tested
Get arrested guess until he get the message
I feel the pressure, under more scrutiny
And what I do? Act more stupidly

Bought more jewelry, more Louis V
My momma couldn’t get through to me
The drama, people suing me
I’m on TV talkin’ like it’s just you and me

I’m just saying ow I feel, man
I ain’t one of the Cosby’s, I ain’t go to Hill, man
I guess the money should have changed him
I guess I should have forgot where I came from

La la la la
Wait ‘til I get my money right
La la la la
Then you can’t tell me nothing, right?

Excuse me? Was you saying something?
uh uh, you can’t tell me nothing
You can’t tell me nothing
Uh uh you can’t tell me nothing
You can’t tell me nothing

Let up the suicide doors
This...
