The call of freedom. Some take it as a joke. Something that is only natural and not appreciated. Ask a group of students at a local university about the bill of rights. Could the students name one amendment? Two? Three? In other countries, citizens are desperately reaching out in the fight against the tyrannical rule of oppresive regimes. These same citizens can only imagine the possibilities of America. This is the story of our generation. An apolitical, utterly ill-informed, young generation who forgets about the sacrifice of many in the past and present. This is the unfortunately the face of America. Yet, among these troubles, we uphold a proud tradition of liberty, opportunity, and freedom. Some may argue that this is a part of the "Noble Lie" by an oligarchial elite. A natural good versus evil approach that reinstates the moral normacy of past generations. (Curtis 1:Strauss) Yet, it is inevitable that a young generation of individuals will answer the call to arms when terror strikes. This isn't restricted to just our nation, but all nations. Terrorism in general is classified by almost all in western society as inherently evil. But, when one states terrorism, what does one define it as? Does it pertain to Oklahoma City, the "D.C. Snipers?" Yes, it does. Terrorism does not only consist of Osama Bin Laden and a severely perverted ideology of Islam, but all acts of terror. If one were to look up the definition of terrorism, he or she would find various definitions, but for all purposes, Merriam-Webster states that terrorism is by definition, "the systematic use of terror, especially as a means of coercion." (Merriam-Webster 2) Terrorism is not something that has been recently invented, and certainly is not something that will go away. Moreover, I am adamant that democracy is an adequate, if not the best solution to the threat of terror. I will also add that terrorism will not and never has been eradicated, and simply, will not, as we are inherently burdened by some who happen to be tyrannical sociopaths. One of the most well-known examples of a terrorist is Osama Bin Laden. He and his group of cronies have single-handly happened to occur mass-casualities among innocent populaces while indoctrinating young, often troubled young people into his perverted vision of Islam and Shariah law. One of Bin Laden's closest friends is Ayman al-Zawahiri. An Egyptian by nature, and an educated man – a surgeon, he has been on Bin Laden's right-hand side for a number of years. Yet, his past is littered with failure often not reported by the media. So certain was al-Zawahiri upon his jihadist ideas, and among these his leadership of the "Egyptian Islamic Jihad," that he attempted to spread the message and radical vision to both Algeria and Egypt. According to Lawrence Wright, author of "The Looming Tower," he attempted a coup in Egypt in early 1981. The coup, in return was a decisive failure and led to his imprisonment. (Wright 3:50) However, the leader of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, was later assasinated, and al-Zawahiri had connections to the assasination. (CFR 5) After all, Sadat invisioned a modernized Egypt with a free and open society. After a U.S. Backed effort in Afghanistan against the Soviet enemies, al-Zawahiri was even disillusioned than before. He returned to Egypt, and planned and carried out terrorist attacks. One attack led to many in Cairo yelling, "Terrorism is the enemy of God!" (Wright 3:186) According to al-Zawahiri, it was a responsibility to rape, kill, and disgrace any who were sympathetic to the west or by definition, were corrupt, and accordingly, against the Koran. In Algeria, thousands were murdered because of proclaimed corruption. (Curtis 1) In massacre after massacre, thousands of Algerians were murdered by those sympathetic to jihadist causes. In return, the jihadists were firmly told to leave, and were extremely unpopular. Throughout the Middle East, acts of terror, tyranny, and oppression are not popular. As they...
