Defining Beauty
Written throughout the pages of modern magazines, lies the destruction and expulsion of girls’ self esteems. Women’s bodies sell everything from food to cars in a lust filled light. They are displayed all around the nation for other women and girls to look upon. Why are standards of beauty being imposed on women, the majority of whom are naturally larger and more mature than any of the models? The answer is economic. By tearing down the average woman’s confidence, they are ensuring growth in the diet and beauty industry. By reading these magazines, taking what they say to heart and furthermore, questioning our own bodies, we are giving in to the profit of such terrible organizations.

Women who are insecure about their bodies are more likely to buy beauty products, new clothes, and diet aids. It is estimated that the diet industry alone is worth anywhere between 40 to 100 billion dollars. Research indicates that the promoting of these thin, tall and airbrushed models are linked to the eating disorders of the majority of girls and women. The American research group Anorexia Nervosa & Related Eating Disorders says that one out of every four college aged women use unhealthy methods of weight control, including: fasting, skipping meals, excessive exercise, laxative abuse, and self-induced vomiting. Due to these magazines, Bulimia and Anorexia are still high in numbers. 70 million individuals are affected by eating disorders worldwide, with 24 million being American.

The fact is, beauty magazines supporting the resemblance of Barbie in women are only concerned about their sales and their income. Perhaps the saddest part of this tragedy is the simple reality that the beauty found in magazines if often unattainable. Due to technology and the ability to Photoshop every last inch of a woman’s natural body, each and every model is comparable to the doll every girl grows up idolizing.
