U.S History D.R Maroukis 9-18-2012 Declaration Of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is a document that was written by the
continental congress and tommas Jefferson in perticular to the king of england and
the english parlament. It was written as a statement to the english that the
colonnies were breaking off from the british empire.
They list all of the reasons leading up to this Decision made by the congress.
Some of the reasons for them wanting to declare Their independence are that the
king george refused to assent to laws that were for the publics good, he forbid his
goveners from passing laws of immediate importance unless he chose to suspend
them and whilst suspended he would utterly neglect them. King george also refused
to pass laws that gave large bodies of people the right of repersentation. He would
also call legeslative bodies togother At places far away from the places they ruled
just so they would consent to what he wanted them to. He also created new offices
just to harrass the people. Another thing that led to the collenists drafting the
declaration of independence was that theKing had kept standing armies in the
collonies during times of peace and forcing the citizens to quarter them in their own
houses. Tommas jefferson also lists that the king had cut off trade from the
colonnies to the rest of the world and imposed taxes unfairly on the colonies.
it is also listed that in many cases trial by jury was suspended and instead the
accused were shiped overseas for their trials. He also suspended many of the
legeslatures and declared power above all others. He also took away some of the
collenists most valuable laws and in doing so he fundamently alterd the forms of
the colonists goverment He also abdicated colonists government by declaring them
out of his protection and starting a war against them. Tommas jefferson goes on to
say that "He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and
destroyed the lives of our people'' this stands out to me as being one of the
strongest word choices in the entire declaretion of independence.
Tommas jefferson goes on to say that the english have started to ship large
standing armies over to the colonnies and also hiring foreign mercinrries to
continue the works of cruelty not equealed even in the barbarous ages. He
goes on to say that king gorge is unworth to be the head of a civilized nation.
Tomas jefferson also goes on to say that the king had offered freedom to any slave
that would take up arms aginst the colonies to kill their freinds and neighbors.
The author of the declartion of independence is largley considered to be tomas
Jefferson, He wrote the draft that was later reviewed and edited by the contintal
congress so for the most part the author was indeed Tomas jefferson who was
considered at the time to be one of the smartest people in the colonies and
afterwards as being one of the smartest presidents the united states ever had.
Tommas jefferson was a laywer by trade who owned many slaves and who also
married a widdow who also had her own slave family.
I firmly believe that some of jeffersons background fond its way into this
declartion of independence. For one most of the arguments he has made have been
mostly from a law standpoint instead of an ethical standpoint....
