Decisions in Paradise
Kava is an island country located in the South Pacific. This country takes economical advantage of its natural resources by selling petroleum and natural gases while its white sandy beaches make it an attractive tourist location. Its tropical region and climate is also perfect for farmers who grow coffee beans, cocoa, bananas, sugar, and other spices (University of Phoenix, 2010).
Unfortunately, Kava is susceptible to tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, petroleum spills, tornadoes, fires, HIV and AIDS, and the population also runs a high risk for avian flu. Recently Kava has been hit by several disasters that have occurred in a very short span of time leaving the island looking more like a war zone rather than a tropical paradise (University of Phoenix, 2010). So now the Kroger Company has made it its personal mission to help Kava restore its economy by establishing the company’s presence on the island in a way that will most benefit the people who live there and their surrounding communities.
Kroger is one of the largest grocery stores and multi-department chains in America. The company operates under several differnet banners such as Ralphs, Food-4-Less, FredMeyer, Smith’s Marketplace, Quickstop, and Fox’s Jewelery (Kroger, 2010). The company’s mission is,“to be a leader in the distribution and merchandising of food, pharmacy, health and personal care items, seasonal merchandise, and related products and services” (Kroger, 2010).
In 2000 Kroger introduced a line of Fair Trade products to its stores’ shelves. These products include things like coffee, tea, and chocolate. The products packaging is stamped with a Fair Trade Certefied label which guarentees that the farmers and workers who worked to harvest the items are paid a fair price for the purchase of their products.
