Nature vs. Nurture
There are many debates around the world that are looked at and talked about around the world; however, some controversies never come to an agreement. For a long time, human behavior has long been debated and discussed in a nature versus nurture argument: Are humans born with certain values? Do humans gain/develop certain values over time? Does civilization or experience determine ones morality? Everyone experiences different things in life and have different views on certain events that happen in life, so the answers to these controversial questions are different for everyone. In William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies, Golding displays many good points in discussing nature versus nurture through a story about young boys stuck on an island.

Lord of the Flies shows how children would act if they were placed in an environment without any guidance from adults. It conveys that everyone needs rules and help in their lives. Without them, society would end up in disaster and crumble just like in the story. Golding is trying to say that humanity needs to be nurtured. He believes that experience does in fact determine ones morality. In his book, when the boys first landed on the island they still showed signs of being nurtured; they had their principles and views of their old society, “We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything” (Golding 40). In the book, two sides form after many conflicts. The one peaceful side tends to show the signs of nurturing similar to what was present in their old lives in civilization. The other group was starting to develop an initial evil due to the new scary environment in which they live and was more invested in nature and hunting.
