Dear Life and Duty
Dear Ms. Robinson,
How are you doing? I hope all is well. My name is Fadel Nasereddin and I will be attending your humble English class for this school year. To begin with, English has, and still is, one of the subjects which I really direct focus and passion into. It is a major building block in constructing a strong foundation for not only my educational future, but my social one as well. From Shakespeare to Aldous Huxley, and subsequently Ernest Hemingway, the English subject has broadly enhanced my knowledge and diversified my perspectives in a positive manner. Now that I have gotten that out of the way, allow me to introduce you to my fun and interesting side. I am a fifteen year old kid who enjoys playing soccer more than anything. It is a great passion of mine as my childhood revolved around it, and I could proudly say that I have finally saved up to attend the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil! My friends and I usually book a court sometime through winter to play an 11- aside game to play as well. Besides soccer, one of my greatest hobbies is to travel around the world. I have already been living in four countries and visited some pretty nice European destinations. As I grow older I will hopefully save a few bucks down my sleeve to go on a backpacking tour across Europe. Public speaking is something which I do enjoy doing for most of the summer, I spent my time working at McDonald’s. I make great patties even though the manager tends to disagree at times, and if you ever happen to stop by at my branch I will supply you with a large coffee all on the house! For the remainder of the summer, however, I finished my volunteer hours by volunteering at a senior residence home and topped it of by going to jams and parties held by both family and friends. This summer would surely be one to remember, despite the fact that it ended within a blink of an eye.

I would also like to thank you on providing us with such handouts, as I think that they do in fact help break

"Class, this is Alberto and he will be joining our class for this last month of the school year," the teacher yelled as I stood next to her puzzled and embarrassed. For a few hours, I plainly sat in my chair without saying a word, reflecting on my already missed memories of school in Rhode Island, until another student named Luis approached me. Of course, I was expecting him to say something in Spanish, but shockingly he spoke to me in English. Without hesitation, I responded to him and we quickly became close friends.…

Every day people are treated in ways that strip them of their humanity and dignity, they are made to feel worthless. Though, one must learn their worth before they die. Through the experiences of Jefferson, Reverend Ambrose, and Miss Emma, we can view how important ones worth is to them, especially to be known before one passes away. The novel "A lesson before dying" by Ernest Gaines, exemplifies that the most significant lesson to learn before dying is that you are worth something no matter what society deems you to be, and as long as you show your humanity and dignity, it does not matter what society thinks.…

Bursting through the front doors of the school I stride out into the summer sun. The last day of school is cloudless and the sun shines brightly, warming my face and long chestnut hair blowing in the slight summer breeze. The breeze is chilly and the weather isn’t quite hot enough to feel like a real summer but that’s Seattle for you. Turning my new IPod to one of my favorite songs I start toward home, excited. For this is not just any last day of school, this is the last day of my junior year of high school. I am now officially, a senior. I had been dreaming about this summer for so long and I am determined to make it the best one of my life. I start sprinting home grinning till it hurts with Rabbit’s song “It’s Love” blaring…

"Traveling is a fool's paradise," Ralph Waldo Emerson said. "I have no cranky objection to world travel for the purposes of art, of study, and goodwill, as long as the individual is first domesticated, or doesn't go abroad with the hope of finding something greater that what he knows. He who travels to be amused, or to get something he doesn't have within, travels away from himself…" While Emerson's comments may seem extreme to those who enjoy the occasional trip for leisure, he makes an important point regarding the value of travel from both a scholarly and personal standpoint. Studying abroad fulfills what Emerson sees as the deeper purpose of travel, which I realized last fall semester when I studied abroad at the University of…

    Personal Sacrifice

Personal sacrifice can be perceived in one of four ways: shocking, spontaneous, sterile, or selfless. Being able to find the true meaning behind an individual's sacrifice as well as pinpointing its exact effects can be extremely tricky, and at times, impossible should one not be equipped with the skills needed to identify such variables. Nevertheless, rhetorical devices such as epiphanies, telegraphic sentences, colloquial language, and cleverly crafted diction are all capable of revealing any effects or clandestine reasoning of one’s altruistic act. An act of sacrifice is capable of revealing the depth of compassion that exists between two people while also triggering feelings of significance within the person benefiting from another’s selfless…
