Dear Freshman,
You are in for a treat. I am about to give you a backstage pass to everything you need to know about surviving DuPont Manual High School. In the beginning things will be pretty crazy and yes you will probably be scared. Do not worry, by the end of the year you will not remember what stupid thing you did on the first day of school or how bad your hair looked. Just remember that High school is going to both the best times and the worst times of your life.
Now, first things first, sleep. Sleep is both your greatest friend and your worst enemy. If you don’t get enough it can really hurt you academically but if you sleep too much there is a possibility your homework won’t get finished in time for your classes. Learning how to juggle sleep, academics, and anything social or extracurricular is a very important skill. Everyone at Manual has their own way of keeping up with things freshman year but sleep is always a struggle for many.
The second most important thing is starting the year off right. If you mess around the first semester of the school year, it will be really hard to try and make up for it later. Start off strong and try to stay positive throughout the year. Keeping up with your classes will be a life saver when it comes to getting sick and trying to finish all of your make up work. Staying attentive at the beginning of the year will help you keep motivated for the rest of the year and help you follow through with your goals you set for yourself.
The last thing that you should keep in mind is that having a “study buddy” isn’t just for little kids. Make sure that you have at least two-three people in each of your classes that you can ask for the homework you missed that day or just ask for some help understanding the material. Your “study buddy” should be someone who is considerably attentive and around your learning pace. It will be better for you to both work out problems together than try to finish them alone by yourself.
Remembering all of these things may be hard at first but do not worry by the end of the year you will be. Also a word to the wise, if a teacher says “this may be on a test in the future”, it is guaranteed that it will be on the next test. Study hard learn a lot. Make sure you remember no one uses their lockers, they are a waste of time, the swimming team meets on the fourth floor for practice, do not be a slow person in the hallways and that senior flirting with you is only flirting because they can’t get anyone their own age.
Yours truly,

Soon to be freshman

My hands were nervously shaking as I tried to open the letter. Was it a rejection? An acceptance? My whole spring break was haunted by this one single letter. Finally, I opened the letter and my eyes began to scan the letter. My eyes scanned it again and again, processing what just happened… I MADE IT! I could barely hold in the joy! I didn’t know what was happening, but my feet were moving towards my parents room, and I barged in. Mom! Dad! I became a FMP! I’m in the Freshmen Mentor Program.…

When I first arrived on campus I treated college as if it were just an extension of high school. I wasn't taking my classes seriously and I was not studying appropriately and therefore on my first couple of test I received a wake-up call after receiving some of the lowest grades I had ever seen. I also was not organized and ended up missing assignment due dates and this led to my grades being lower than expected. So in my opinion, the best advice I can give First-Years is to be organized, be serious and attend…

I had some challenges in the first semester. I realized that it gets harder every year. I felt like ninth grade was a bit easier than this year. The final for English was easy. There were only two questions. We took a final for the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. My goal is to have good grades, but also pass every class so that I don’t have to retake any. I want to be able to graduate on time. It always gets hard when almost end of the semester. That is the time when teachers start to give out more work. It’s a good idea but the same time bad. It can help bring grades up for some people. Most people are lazy so they rather not do it and fail the semester. My challenge was trying to focus with so many distractions in the way.…

This letter is to tell you that I ( Erin Ellison) deserve an A (91.5%) in your class. I deserve this grade because I have put forth my best effort, completed nearly all my assignments on time, have received good grades on those assignments, and those grades are a direct reflection of the effort I have put into each one of those assignments. Another reason I have given this grade to myself is I regularly attend classes and try to take part, and not only attend class but be engaged with the class. The last reason is I redo any of my assignments that I do not get a good enough grade on; although not only to improve my grade, but also to learn from the mistakes I made. Currently, I have an 88.8 percent in your class, so for the rest of the…

I know coming right into college will be challenging for me. One of my challenges that I face is that I have ADHD which means that I lose focus very easily, when I hear noises it takes my focus off my work so its hard to stay on task and even harder to get back on task. Another one of my challenges is that I am a athlete, I play soccer and I also have to train for when I transfer to CNU to run cross country and track for the school. Also I tend to procrastinate, I like to put things off until the last second and that is not a good habit, I know in college if I do that its…

Things that I have learned so far about high school is that the more you will realize who your friends are they will really start showing you their “true colors”. Furthermore balancing the workload is a very hard task because you have extra curriculum and other responsibilities dealing with your household. Being in high school you aren't going to get pampered or a teacher constantly coming to you, tell you that you have work due , missing assignments , being in class on time and keeping up with your grades . Also , I have learned that you shouldn't wait unit the last minute to turn work in or ask for extra credit , most certainty you shouldn't wait until the day before the due date to turn in your assignments . By having other classes that will be due…
