Deadly Invader's Project - Biology
Deadly Invaders Project
1. A virus is an infective agent that has a nucleic acid molecule in a protective coat. They generally range in 20 to 300 nm, has RNA or DNA that multiplies in a cell. A lytic phase in a virus is when the conditions for infecting are favorable, when there are many “victim cells” and good conditions outside the cell.
2. Viruses are not alive, as they only have DNA/RNA and few other necessary ingredients of a cell. They lack too many things to be called living. Viruses reproduce by inserting their genetic encoding into a “host cell” and the DNA or RNA has all the necessities to reproduce.
3. Antibiotics kill certain bacteria and not all bacteria. They are made to cure certain illnesses and kill living things. Viruses are not living, so there is nothing to kill.
4. The West Nile Virus, or flavivirus, is a disease spread by mosquitoes. It is thought to have been spread from mosquitoes eating dead bird blood and getting infected. Many people don’t even realize that they have it; as if you’re healthy you won’t get any symptoms. It affects young children, older people, pregnant people and people with health problems, such as HIV or AIDS.
5. Filoviruses belong to a virus family called Filoviridae and there are two known types of viruses in this family: The Marburg and the Ebola.

6. Angola is in Africa, located just below the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A virus is a small infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of other organisms. A virus is a small parasite that cannot reproduce by itself. Once it infects a susceptible cell, however, a virus can direct the cell to produce many more viruses. Viruses can infect all types of life forms, such as animals and plants to microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea.…

Viruses are tiny particles of DNA that have the potential to make people and animals extremely sick. It is ironic that viruses are very powerful, yet cannot reproduce by itself. They have various shapes, including rod-like, spherical, and phage. They generally have a similar structure: a protein coat called a capsid, a small amount of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) that is located within the capsid. Important characteristics include: not living and no respiration. They can only reproduce within a host through the lytic cycle where the virus attacks the host, injects it its nucleic acid into the host, and then spreads throughout the host. They systematically infect the person or animal. Widely known viruses include HIV and Hepatitis B.…

VIRUSES – viruses are smaller than bacteria and can only be seen under a microscope, they can only multiply in living cells. A virus is a simple structure. It is not a cell nor is it living. A virus is simply a coat of protein wrapped around genetic material. Below is an image of a virus and its structure, with labels identifying what a virus is made up off:…

West Nile Virus had been found to be caused by mosquitoes that have been infected, that is those carrying the virus. The virus originates from the birds’ infected blood, it was found that the mosquitoes are able to transmit the virus to people and animals, and also can be spread through transfusion of blood, organs transplant during pregnancy and breastfeeding (Hayes and O’Leary 2004). Fortunately, it cannot be transmitted through; hugging, kissing, touching or being around infected people additionally cannot be spread from other animals to human beings. People who live near stagnant water, which offer a breeding place for mosquitoes, are easier to get infected. Consequently, the large population around these people are also at risk of the infection. Another group of people frequently attacked are those with low immune systems, for instance people infected with HIV/ AIDS. Their immune system is low and cannot fight the infection (White and Morse 2002).…

(Center for Disease Control website) Of the DF virus there are four main strains, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. Two of these strains are the DF, and two are the Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), a more severe and possibly fatal form of this disease.
