In the story “Contents of a Dead Man’s Pocket,” the young man by the name of, Tom, is constantly caught putting off spending time with his wife for his work. In the opening there is an example of this when he turns down an opportunity to go to the movies with his wife to finish a project for work that he had been working on for months.
The story is complicated when the paper that had the entire project written on it flew out the window when his wife left to go to the movies. This paper to him, represented to him his life and he wasn’t about to let it just fly out the window. So Tom went out onto the small ledge outside his window to retrieve it. The story was complicated again when Tom looked down for the first time, being gripped with fear, trembled and did not allow himself to proceed any further to safety.
While Tom was on the ledge, a flood of emotions and thoughts proceeded through his mind. But summoning all of his strength he took the last couple of steps to his window, stumbled and feel, slamming it shut and putting himself in the position of being locked outside the window, kneeling on the ledge.
Now nearing the climax of the story, Tom had been examining his life for a while and realized he could die at any moment on the ledge He began to realize that life is too short to not take in the simple pleasures.Finally at the climax of the story, Tom decided to break the window with his fist, but he risked the chance of it not breaking and the rebound would push him off the ledge. But when he broke through the window and was finally in his apartment his attitude had changed from the tightly wound workaholic to a happy-go-lucky young man.
The resolution of the story is that life is short and should not be taken for granted. Tom’s entire perspective on life had changed from the beginning to the end of the story and I believe that examining one’s own life, we can always find areas that need improvement that we can change....
