I negate with today’s resolution; “the abuse of illegal drugs ought to be treated as a matter of public health not of criminal justice”.
Definition:
Criminal justice system: the system of law enforcement, involving police, lawyers, courts, and coercions, used for all stages of criminal proceedings and punishment.
Value:                                                                                                                                                                             My value for this round is societal welfare. It is defined as protecting the well being of a society in matters of health, safety, order, and economics.
Criterion:                                                                                                                                                                             My criterion for this sound is utilitarianism. It is defined as doing the greater amount of good for the greatest amount of people. My value and value criterion are achieved by limiting the number of drug abusers as well as diminishing the spread of STD’s. The best tool to solve these problems would be through the usage of the criminal justice system.
Contention 1: reform of the criminal justice system.
The criminal justice system can be reformed to deal effectively with the problems of drug abuse and infectious diseases. While traditional methods of prison time are effective the presence of hundreds of thousands of drug addicts in the criminal justice system allows the government to directly solve the problems with drug abuse. If the government uses drug courts to enforce treatment it will more successfully handle drug abuse than by decriminalizing drugs.
