Dazed and Confused
What would come to mind when thinking about the late seventies. Most people would say drugs, sex, and music. That is the exact plot of Dazed and Confused. It actually describes the whole movie in the two-word title. Dazed and Confused brings many people back to the most enjoyable years of their life, and many teenagers to only wish to live in that decade. Following the lives of a bunch of high school juniors transitioning to seniors and incoming freshmen as they quit school and prepare for a party that evening, which jumps around between different characters; the stoner, the jock, the intellectual, and the cool guy; including some truly horrific high school initiation rituals. For instance, when the bell rings, all hell will break loose. High school jocks are lurking outside junior-high classrooms, custom-made paddles in hand, to ceremonially sting the posteriors of boys about to be fall freshmen. Meanwhile, the female seniors are cooking up similarly abusive rites of passage for the incoming freshmen girls. What Dazed and Confused does absolutely brilliantly is setup and execute a period piece. From cars to clothes to hair to furnishings including the amazing soundtrack, which to me is a huge reason to watch the film from its great rock tunes from beginning to end. Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, KISS, The Runaways, and Lynyrd Skynyrd are just a few of the bands you'll come across listening to the movie and goes perfectly with whatever scene comes up in film.
