Assignment #4

Hed 116-005

1.Throughout his struggle, David did many things to try and help his survival on a day to day basis. In David's worst of times he would pass the time by fantasizing to help ease his mind and or to block out whatever horrific game his mother wanted to play. " I fantasized i was a prince or a comic book hero", David often would imagine. When David's hunger pains became more than he could bare he resulted to eating "scraps" from the garbage, dog food bowls, and began stealing from grocery stores, school lunches and food from other children's lunch boxes at school. David goes on to say "During the lunch recesses, I stuffed the sandwiches down my throat." David also clung to his father for protection, he believed that his father was his hero, like any small boy; "Father was my only hope, and he did all he could to sneak me scraps of food." In the beginning his father seemed to try and help out but to my surprise David's father's help was short lived, ultimately resulting in more misery from his mother.

2.David lost all respect for his father after the stabbing incident. David's mother stabbed him a little above his stomach area, supposedly not on purpose. After David was stabbed he was told he had thirty minutes to finish the dishes. While trying to accomplish just that David saw his father in the living room reading the newspaper on the couch as he often did. David thought for sure his father would help him, "I had felt in my heart that he would scoop me up in his arms and take me away. I even imagined him ripping off his shirt to expose his true identity, before flying through the air like Superman." David's father didn't end up helping but instead repeatedly told David to finish his chores before mother caught him and gave the both of them hell.

3.David had thought things were different on a few occasions. The most significant occasion was after Kevin David's newest brother was born. David's mother began telling David of how tired she was of the life the family was living. She went on to apologize and promised that she would make up for all the lost time between them. "As she ran her hand through my hair, I began to cry. Mother cried too, and I began to feel that my bad times were finished," David said. He was so excited, David's mother for the first time in a long time began acting like the caring loving soul that David had once known. This picture perfect time was short lived. To David's surprise his mother was once again lying, she only told him it was over because a lady from social services was coming over. As David realized this, "I felt as though a bomb had exploded deep in the pit of my stomach. It suddenly occurred to me why mother had changed the day before; why she had been so nice to me." All his mother was trying to accomplish was a clean observation from the social worker on their family's behavior. For a moment there David's mother had him fooled, but not for long.

4.One situation where David was wounded by the disregard of his situation by others was when the stabbing incident took place. His mother began to lose her balance and out of the corner of David's eye before he could even react the knife she was holding went right into David. I don't believe for one second that this was an accident as much as David repeated it was. Another incident where David was hurt was when the bully at his school beat him up. The bully and other classmates were making fun of him and totally disregarded that maybe his situation was bad at home. They would make fun of his appearance, clothes, and the way he smelled without considering that it wasn't his fault. If any of the children at school actually open there eyes they would of been able to see that he is an abused child and that David does not deserve to be bullied like he was.

5.Yes, I feel in today's society many children are wounded by the disregard of others. People are careless and...
