Chapter 1 Introduction
“DEAN” Empowering the administrator/s decisions
Data is emerging as a new science, a result of the unprecedented increase in the amount of digital information produced today and the realization of innovative ways to extract value from it. Technological advances in Mapua Institute of Technology (MAPUA) have led to an abundance of digital information sources that constantly generate data in managing the school, coherently the School of Information Technology(SOIT). Though its effectiveness explores several key aspects of the school – student records [enrolment statistics, number of transferees (those that come in and out of SOIT), shifters, number of graduates], faculty records [performance evaluation data, faculty profile, faculty load and grade statistics for each faculty member], and the curriculum that would include the different curricula of the three-programs, course equivalency data, and its grade statistics for each course. In drawing together the key aspects mentioned this will empower the decision making of the Dean of the School of Information Technology, adherently in 3 main factors: (1) Manage enrolment efficiently, (2)Retain Students, (3)strengthen the ties with its alumni, faculty, students like wise keeping the campus safe and maintaining its standards. Henceforth, data will play a big role in order to achieve this goal, so a way to properly understand and manage them is needed. Data analytics is the science of examining raw data with the purpose of drawing conclusions about that information. Data analytics is used in many industries to allow companies and organization to make better business decisions and in the sciences to verify or disprove existing models or theories. Data analytics is distinguished from data mining by the scope, purpose and focus of the analysis. Data miners sort through huge data sets using sophisticated software to identify undiscovered patterns and establish hidden relationships. Data analytics focuses on inference, the process of deriving a conclusion based on what is already known by the researcher.
With the use of data analytics, datasets would then be properly monitored and assessed, thus providing datasets for the Students, Faculty and the Curriculum. This will help to determine whether the systems in place effectively protect data, operate efficiently and succeed in accomplishing an organization's overall goals.
Being Mapua-Makati as the proponents’ client which is the first ABET-accredited technological institute in the Philippines, that has programs delivered through a cutting-edge method and stateof-the-art facilities, trains and forms an individual to possess important knowledge, skills, and values, collectively known as outcomes that will make them globally competitive and truly qualified to serve a wide range of professions in different fields, which is reflected over its 88 years of unparalleled excellent service in providing great knowledge and skills which they have pride of. Through the datasets, the proponents aim to develop a system application that will garner the monitoring and assessment of MAPUA which is discussed in the significance of the study (i.e. Curriculum Datasets).
Purpose and Specific Objectives of the Study / Project
This research primarily aims to determine whether data analytics can help the administration on developing better business strategies in 3 fields: (1) The Students, (2) The Faculty, and
(3) The Curriculum. Item(1) will cover the evolving number of student enrolled, number of transferees to SOIT and out of SOIT, as well as the number of shifters and graduates; (2) identifying performance evaluation data, profile of faculty, faculty load, Grade statistics for each faculty; (3) understanding the different curricula of the three programs, course equivalency data, grade statistics for each course.
