Andrea Smythe a native of Chicago IL. Her dance training began at the Katherine Dunham Center for the performing arts formally known as the PATC in East St. Louis Illinois where she received her BS degree in Theatre and Dance at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) where she taught for 30 years. There she studied dance under the matchless tutelage of Miss Katherine Dunham and members of her company, Lucille Ellis, Archie Savage, Norman Davis and Tommie Gomez.

She has performed in the PBS Special, Katherine Dunham-Devine Drum Beat, with the Katherine Dunham Dance Company, performing at Carnegie Hall in New York and featured with Mor Thiam’s International, Senegalese Dance Company, Cossane at the Disney World Epcot Center opening celebration. She’s also performed Dave Burburke concert at the Shrine of our Lady of the Snow. She has also had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to perform at the opening act for Miss Melba Moore and at the International Black Dance Conference, San Diego.

She was honored at the Dynamic Dance Festival in Atlanta, Georgia in 2006 for her work with the performing arts program and numerous other organizations in the Metro East Area.

She performed in the PBS Special, “Katherine Dunham-Divine Drum Beat”, with the Katherine Dunham Dance Company, and performed in New York city at Carnegie Hall and was featured with Mor Thiam’s, International Senegalese Dance Company, “Cossane “. She has had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to perform as the opening act for Miss Melba Moore and at the International Black Dance Conference – San Diego. Andrea is currently teaching dance at Southern Illinois University (SIU) – Edwardsville, Illinois, East St. Louis Campus.
