Overall, the Danceworks Mad Hot ballroom dance program offers several indications for its success in the classroom. Not only does it meet the needs of educational issues, but it also makes a large influence on society down the road. This can only be carried out through a positive process throughout the movement. Only then can the program be concluded to have great outcome evaluations. The documentary highlights some of the beneficial works being done with fifth graders in the central city. Fortunately, these efforts are going a long way for the students…
“For me, I think the importance of going back to the traditional style of dance was that I was able to observe and watch our traditional teachers, not just for the dance steps but to be aware of what environment they came from, what their landscape was like geographically, and to try and understand their kinship and their customs and their values.”…
Dance 211 has truly been a unique class unlike any other that I have taken in the past, from the course topic to a new way of learning. While my focus was on the Philippines, I was able to learn from my peers about a wide range of topics from Chinese lion dance, to Buddhism, and Japanese Butoh dance to name a few.…

We have to get our muscles going and warmed up. Then we start to work on technique and get stronger at it. It is the one weakness that can dig us in a whole if it is not correct. Bad technique can lead to injuries and bad grades.” You need to follow the guidelines that the teacher wants. You have to take criticism well. It is unprofessional it you start crying in front of a judge or, teacher. When you want dance to be your profession you have to take it as serious as an actor rehearsing for the biggest role of the year that could award them the Acadamy Award of Best Actor.…
Although most scholars simply define it as the art of designing and arranging dance, American ballet icon George Balanchine distinguished dance choreography as “an expression of time and space, using the control of movement and gesture to communicate,” (Anderson 5). This definition puts emphasis on the rigid structure and body control required to successfully produce a piece of choreography, an idea not uncommon in the ballet community (Conoley-Paladino). Like Balanchine, modern dance icon Merce Cunningham defined dance choreography as “an art in space and time.” However, in contrast, he stated that “the object of the dancer is to obliterate” that art, drawing on the importance of…

When I turned three, my mom signed me up for my first ballet class, and I loved it. Moving along to the music brought me joy and fulfillment. My liking for it has gradually grown into a passion. But over the years, I have also noticed a stigma for extreme competitiveness and perfectionism. Something that originally began as a form of worship has transformed into a celebration of the superficial and frivolous. Dancing often creates many concerns for young performers.…
For so long I felt like I was stagnant in my dancing. I felt like there was no improvement however Towson changed that for me. Since I have been here at Towson I have noticed that my dancing abilities, my dance knowledge, and creativity has increased. My hope is that going to DTH will help me continue on this learning spry that I am on. I believe with every new environment you are in you have an opportunity to learn something positive that will help you grow. My ultimate hope is to take what I learn at DTH and use it as I continue my career at Towson. In comp class this year I discovered my many performance presences, I…
I have experienced and I believe for many there is a great feeling of achievement to be found in traditional dance training. This process also requires a long attention span and teaches you self-discipline to keep this.…

Growing up, I’ve always wanted to dance, I’ve dance when I was little for about a year and that was it. And through dancing, I’ve grown to also love to learn how to do little “tricks” with my body. However, I was not able to do much with this interest or passion because of limited opportunities. Now that I am in college, I feel freer and more independent. I am currently signed up to perform a traditional dance with HMSA for their heritage event and is also participating in the gymnastics club. However, college is hard and requires a lot of my time so that has also limited my commitment and to the club, and participation. Despite that, I am glad that I found something that I love and can do in the…
In the 1800s and early 1900s, dancing was considered inspirational and a beautiful way to express art and emotions. Isadora Duncan believed she could express her views of life and convey them through her passion for dance. Despite her struggles throughout her life to be able to withstand her social status and gain acceptance to the public, Isadora Duncan gave raise to a new kind of dance that no one had ever seen and became one of the most famous dancers of her time.…
When my younger sister was four years old, she attended a dance lesson with a friend for a day. She immediately fell in love with it, and picked up lessons the following week. A year later, I thought “this is a great way to stay in shape and keep myself busy.” Little did I know how much I would fall in love with it. I soon became enthralled with the idea of being a star student, despite starting at such a late age. I loved the idea of competitions,…
Modern dance in my eyes is a form of dance which focuses on the serious expression of the inner emotions, using a free-flowing, interpretive style, rather than following the rigid rules characteristics of many dance disciplines. When modern dance first developed at the turn of the 20th century, it was considered extremely radical and iconoclastic; over the years since, modern dance has become more closely mingled with other disciplines like jazz dance, ballet, and tap, and some dancers work in both modern and classical dance styles, drawing techniques from both.…
