CYP Core 3.4 – Support Children and Young People’s Health and Safety

1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services When planning a healthy and safe environment in my setting I have to take into account a number of factors. The space I have and the space I allow the children in my care to use. For example the children have quiet time in the front room, messy time and free play in the play room and the garden, the children do not go into the kitchen apart from to pass through to the bathroom or to observe our prepared food going into the oven. I also have to take into account how many children I am caring for, and their ages and stage. The weather plays a big factor, for example if it’s very hot I wouldn’t allow children outdoors for long periods of time and they would not go out without sun cream and a sun hat. I would have a signed permission form for the cream in line with health and safety.

1.2Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely I do a weekly risk assessment of my property as a hole, to check that it is safe for the children I care for and also for myself. I check everywhere in great detail and add to my risk assessment file when necessary. A risk assessment is also done for every pet in my home as I feel children should be able to experience animals, but in a safe and secure environment and the children I care for enjoy this. I have risk assessments in place for the park, the school run, soft play and another child minders house, these are looked at on a regular basis to ensure they are still appropriate and amended where I think it is needed. I ask any individual working with me to follow this high standard and to ensure they alert me to any dangers they may find. I also ask they attend health and safety courses with myself. I encourage the children to get involved, we talk a lot about the dangers around the home and when we are out and about.

1.4 Explain how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in own work setting or service I have a good understanding of what is required of me when it comes to health and safety legislation. For example I am required to keep my fridge and freezer at certain temperatures, I monitor this by using a thermometer and record my findings. This is a new document as I was using the factory settings on them but I found these to be unreliable and chose to use something I could rely on. I am also required to have risk assessments in place for my property and its surroundings and also for any outings I go on. I am required to have a risk assessment in place for any risk a child in my care may come into contact with. This protects myself and the child I care for. I have a cleaning schedule which enables me to monitor the cleaning of the toys the children use this gets done weekly cleaning different things on different days. General household duties which include keeping the house and garden clean and hygienic and suitable for children to be in, these are conducted throughout each day to ensure children’s safety against bacteria and illness.

If I find any of what I am doing is not to the health and safety legislation, or something is not working I will change it slightly so that this works properly and effectively.

2.4 Explain how health and safety risk assessments are monitored and reviewed

I have a 3 risk assessment files,
1 is for my property both inside and out
2 is for the animals in my home
3 is for any outings we go on

1 is looked at weekly or whenever anything new enters my home or if anything should leave. 2 is looked at when a new pet comes to stay with me, also if anything should happen that I have not picked up on previously and I feel it needs to be added....
