Being a college student in today’s society is very challenging. With the growing rate of divorces and single family incomes, the decision to go back to school is one that needs to be thought out very carefully. Students now have the opportunity to decide whether to take traditional classes or on-line classes, based on their particular needs. Being a single mom, I found that gas, employment, and the family were issues that played a huge role in my final decision on which type of classes were better for me.
In traditional classes, there is the worry about the cost of gas to get to and from school. A thirty minute drive could cost you an extra ten to twenty dollars a day. That begins to add up when you have classes two or three days a week. Also, there is the challenge of scheduling your classes around your employment. There are some employers who will have no problem accommodating your class schedule, but others are not so cooperative. Besides, when you are the only one supporting your family, you need to work all the hours you can get, since bills have to be paid. Furthermore, you have your family responsibilities, and it is hard to go to class when your child is sick or you have a doctor’s appointment that can’t be missed. This can be a huge problem when you are allowed only so many absences per semester.
On the other hand, on-line classes can be really convenient, and convenience is always the key for the single parent college student. There is no worry about spending that extra money on gas to get back and forth to school. Taking an on-line class is so easy, and at the touch of a button, you are there. Also, there is less scheduling challenge with your employer. For example, if you are in a traditional class, what do you do if you employer calls you in to work, because another employee is sick, and it is a class day?
