“Business research can be described as a systematic and organized effort to investigate a specific problem encountered in the work setting, that needs a solution” (Sekaran, 2003, p. 3). Companies use research to reduce uncertainty and solve problems in the busy and hectic workplace. Researchers Petri Puhakainen and Mikko Siponen chose to address the issue of employee noncompliance with information systems security policies. More specifically, they are looking to prove which of two training program theories will best achieve compliance with said policies. They employed various data collection methods to their research into this matter. In the end, the researchers conclude that the training theories yield positive results and are practical to use.
Define Business Research and Its Purpose
Businesses encounter problems from time to time. In order to solve these problems, they use business research. Business research is a thought out and planned approach to investigating problems in the workplace. The goal of business research is to solve the problems that a business may face. Business research consists of several processes, including inquiry, investigation, examination, and experimentation. It allows a manager to make an informed decision to counter the problems that he or she may face. “The difference between the manager who uses common sense alone to analyze and make a decision in a given situation, and the investigator who uses a scientific method, is that the latter does a systematic inquiry into the matter and proceeds to describe, explain, or predict phenomena based on data carefully collected for the purpose” (Sekaran, 2003, p. 3).
