Today I will be demonstrating the art of cup beating. Cup beating is believed to be invented by Rich Mullins. He used the cup rhythm to accompany his song called “Screen Door” and it is shown in his music video. And after that came, the cup game, which was commonly played in Christian camps and later during recess at school. Cup beating has recently skyrocketed into popularity because of the movie “Pitch Perfect” in which actress Anna Kendrick auditioned for a role in the Barden Bella’s, an Acapella group, using only a cup and her voice. After I saw this movie, I wanted to learn how to do the cup beat. I was determined to learn the cup beat and teach all of my friends and my coaches included and now we are performing for you. The cup- beat is an intriguing activity to learn and I am Excited to share it with you today. I am going to explain the art of cup beating while my partner help demonstrate it. The materials required are simply a cup and a flat surface. Any cup size is usable; however, the level of difficulty is easily increased with glass cups that could break heavy cups that could be hard to move around, or extremely light cups that can slide around easily. So, somewhere in the middle is preferable. The blue cup that we have is heavy, high pitched, and loud, while the pink cup has a full sound and a lower pitch. We also have a red solo cup that is really light, which has a little higher pitch than the pink cup but also a weaker sound. We then have a Styrofoam cup which has a similar pitch to the pink cup but sounds very airy. If a cup is not available to you, a small plastic container would also work like our sour cream container. Once you have your cup (or container), you find a flat hard surface to work with. Usually a counter, table, or even the floor works. You can either sit or stand. I personally prefer to sit.
