Although many westerners still view Vietnam through the critical eyes of war, Vietnam, in reality is a country filled to the brim with natural beauty and serene villages. Its mountainous countryside and rainforest regions continue to mystify visitors with its exotic wildlife and rare florae. Its many island and beaches are amongst the finest in Southeast Asia, and its gastronomy is possibly the most delicious and exotic you will ever find. Over three decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united, and in that time it has done an extraordinary job of healing its wounds of war. To today’s tourist and visitors, this beautiful and courteous country is an enormous cradle of history and culture. The richness of Vietnam's origins is evident throughout its culture. Spiritual life in Vietnam is a grand melting pot of different religion, including Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Tam Giao (literally 'triple religion'), which is a blend of Taoism, popular Chinese beliefs, and ancient Vietnamese animism. Vietnamese life revolves around the family. The Vietnamese family usually consists of the nuclear as well as the extended family. It is not uncommon for three generations to be living together under one roof or next door to each other. Traditionally the father is the head of the family and it is his responsibility to provide food, clothing and shelter and make important decisions. Women were treated with certain respect, but they are held under the man in social status. Within the same tradition it is believed that after someone dies his or her spirit lives on. Descendants will "worship" their ancestors to ensure their good favor. On the anniversary of a person's death, ceremonies are held in their memory. They are also remembered during certain lunar festivals and souls are consulted...
