Cultural Speech
Cruz Maria Velazquez is 72 years old and she is my maternal grandmother. My grandmother comes from a family of 12 children. She grew up in poverty and had to drop out of school in the third grade to help bring money into the home. She was growing up in her hometown of Ponce, Puerto Rico and had to take a job in the home of a doctor living in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There is a distance of 1 hour and a half of travel, which she did by bus. My grandmother had to leave her family at the age of 9 years old to become a live in nanny. She had to care for two small children, wash and iron clothes, clean the house and cook. Her sister Nati, had to do the same thing not far from where my grandmother was…and she was only 8!!! My grandmother shared that when she would write letters to her mom, she would cry and tell her that she wanted to come home. Her mom would tell her, to stop crying and that she had to stay and work. This was very difficult for my grandmother to do as a child. It affected how she had relationships with her own children. She didn’t know how to be affectionate and just give a hug. It affected in many other ways, except in the area of work. She was always a hard worker, due to her hard upbringing.
My grandfather was stationed in Germany during World War 2 and had just returned to Ponce. My grandmother ended up getting together with my grandfather at the age of 15 years old. She gave birth to my mom in a little wooded house with the aid of a midwife. They came to Rochester in 1960 at a time of intense racism. My grandparents suffered racism everywhere they went. Once my Grandfather went out with two other friends for a drink at a bar and they were refused service. A huge fight broke out, because he wouldn’t leave until he got service and the bartender pulled out a gun on them. After the fight my grandfather was arrested in his home. All he wanted was to be treated like everyone else.
My mother witnessed when her dad was arrested and she says that it was so

I felt I was well prepared for my first speech, I knew my research very well and felt like my arrangement and flow throughout the speech was well organized. If I had to change a couple of things I would definitely change my emotional approach. I felt like I didn’t change my tone of voice. I think that was the case because I was nervous coming into my speech and towards the end I was more comfortable and I started to change my voice and my emotional approach was better. I felt that it was well organized, I structured it well because of every item that I ended with, it picked up from what I was talking about. During my items I organized it well enough so that the audience knew what I was talking about. I didn’t jumble around with anything so that the audience would be lost. I used this pattern because it is very important to stick with something that you are talking about and to provide information on that particular subject and not go sentence after sentence talking about something else. I felt like my introduction could have used some work because I started off by just saying my name and getting right to my items. I felt like my conclusion was well organized. I was talking about my future item and once I was finished with that I said, “I have lived a very blessed 22 years and I am excited to see what the future holds, Thank you”. I will continue to work on my conclusions and make them better for my next two speeches.…

My dad was fifteen years when he did something I can never even imagine about doing; he crossed the border. He sacrificed so much in order to live a better life, without him I would not be writing this essay right now. My mother is a first generation Mexican-American, like myself, and also experienced the affects of her parents wanting more for their family. Fortunately for us, our family has strived in today’s society and would not be where we are without hardwork and dedication.…

I hail from Santa Ana, California where Hispanics make up 76.1% of the city’s population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau (2009). In addition, my Mexican American grandparents primarily raised me. The neighborhood I where I lived consisted of fellow Hispanics and distant relatives. The Hispanic influence shaped my strong family values and racial identification. My grandparents truly believe that regardless of circumstance, family is first and above all else. The fact they raised me and still enjoy my company today is a testament to this teaching.…

Doesn’t everyone just hate snoring? You have to agree with me that when you are awake at night and you are with some one that snores it is the most irritating thing in the world as half the time it is impossible to get back to sleep. My family was raised in Cuba; we were a poor family, but a hard working family who never went to bed without dinner. My grandmother left school while she was in sixth grade because she had to take care of her four brothers, while her mom worked sewing weeding dresses which took her days to finish. Years past and my mother grew up in a hard working environment. Her dad had alcoholic problems which cause him to get aggressive. His behavior affected my grandmother and my mom in a lot of different ways. After years of suffering they ran away and left to another city. My grandmother always encourages my mom to study and follow her dreams. My mother was so motivated by her mom that she finished high school with a high GPA, and won a free scholarship to Habana, the capital of Cuba. She knew it was the only chance she had to improve her life style, but refuse to leave. Her reasons were that she didn’t want to leave her mom sick, and move far away; and her words were “my mother goes before anything, and she needs me now.” My grandmother suffered from claustrophobia; she had a resent accident at the hotel she was working; the elevator broke and she was stuck inside for five hours.…
