Cultural Reflection
My Experience at a Traditional Japanese Restaurant This past weekend, I went back to my alma mater, which is located in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, I went to a traditional Japanese restaurant named Sushi Kame. Although the name suggests only sushi, they serve multiple Japanese entrees. However, I went with a friend who loves sushi, so that is what we ordered. After looking over the menu several times, we chose five different sushi rolls to try. Our waitress was not a native English speaker, so we had some difficulty ordering. For example, we ordered a roll that came prepared with jalapenos, but wanted to substitute the jalapenos with avocado. We thought the waitress understood, but our rolls came stuffed with jalapeno, showing the obvious language barrier difficulties with everyday interactions between native English speakers and English language learners. Before our meal came, the waitress brought us out two moist, warm towels. I had never had this done before so I began to place the towel on my lap, as is customary at American restaurants. However, when the waitress continued to stare at me, I realized I had done something wrong. My friend, who was a seasoned guest at this restaurant, told me that the towels were for hygienic reasons. I washed my hands and gave the towels back to the waitress. Our sushi came displayed on a wooden boat, which I found very interesting. I am used to my food being served on plates and platters, but the boat added a nice touch. Our waitress brought chopsticks out with our sushi. I broke them apart and started fidgeting with them when I saw that my friend was rubbing his together. I asked him why he was doing this, and he explained to me that it is just etiquette—you rub the chopsticks together to prevent getting splinters. He also showed me how to hold the chopsticks, which was a struggle, but I wanted to get the full cultural experience so I continued to work with them. The sushi was

Culture can be basically defined as a pattern of learned behavior and ideas acquired by people as members of society. Culture was created in order to accommodate human beings in different society and establish their identity. Culture is not accustomed to one specific characteristic. It has a multiple dimensions. The way we talk, dress, eat, sleep, work and our knowledge and skills can be accustomed to our culture. These human manners are not uniform all over the place so, they change over time and space. Thus anthropologists have distinguished different cultural traditions different from one another with very thin line between them. And in the course people share, burrow and practice culture from one other. Cultural practices have become inevitable part of human being because we have become biologically dependent on culture for our own survival. For example human beings are not born with some natural instincts. In fact we depend upon the support, nurture and culture of our surroundings to survive. And by learning the cultural practice of the place we live in, we become mature enough to make rational decision and act for our own survival.…

One of my greatest pet peeves is seeing people leaving a complete mess on their tables at restaurants. To me it makes me feel like that is very disrespectful to the employees, especially whenever you can easily pick it up yourself or there is a garbage near by. I’ve always been a clumsy person so it's hard for me not to make a mess. But what I learned was that it's okay to be a little messy sometimes just to make sure you clean up after yourself if allowed the opportunity. I partially blame my father for this pet peeve of mine.…

It's a long day at Phoenix College, I was exhausted and needed some sleep. I was also starving because I missed breakfast and didn't have any snacks throughout the day. So I eventually decided to go eat with my girlfriend due to my hunger and my need for company. My girlfriend and I went to Cane's Raising Chicken Finger further late that evening. When we got to the restaurant we rushed inside because it was furiously burning hot outside as we wanted to avoid the heat as much as possible. The restaurant politely greeted us as we walked up to the cashier. We began to order, our order was six chicken fingers, two Texas toasts, two sauces, a side of fries and a lemonade. Without assistance, we found a booth and sat down. It took a couple of…

Luckily, the worries were set aside once we actually sat at the table. The table itself was very clean without so much as the streaks of the wipe down that most likely happened recently. Unraveling the napkin, which was wrapped around the silverware, revealed a shiny fork, knife, and spoon with no water spots to be found. The cleanliness of the restaurant was surpassed only by the customer service.…

Being culturally competent of a student’s culture is essential for school counselors within a diverse population. In order for a school counselor to be culturally competent, it is essential for them to be aware of three major ideas: know yourself, know the student, and know the technique. Within these three competencies there are common themes that are utilized throughout each. Beliefs and attitudes, knowledge, and skills are all indispensable within the context of school counseling. Throughout the evolution of school counseling, these concepts have been consistent with multicultural counseling. However, based on recent research counselors are developing reason to believe that it is also imperative to explore spirituality as one of the competencies. These multicultural counseling competencies as well as spirituality will all be explored within this paper in regards to how school counselors (and myself, as a school counselor in training) can best counsel and work through the diverse issues of their students. The competencies being addressed can be further explored in Operationalization of the Multicultural Counseling Competencies (Arredondo, et al., 1996).…

I have lived in Mexico for the most part of my life and I also lived in the United States a couple years ago; language was never a barrier to me since I knew enough english to get around even if I was not sure if I was saying everything the correct way, I never felt intimidated by language until I arrived in France, at first it was very hard for me to get around due to the fact that I only knew a few words in french like “merci”, “mon amie”, “Je te aime” and “bonjour” of course it was not enough to even try, or at least that’s what I thought until I started trying to speak english to french people. Unlike experiences I’ve had in other countries before, in France it seemed impossible to find someone who spoke other language than their native one.…

After what seemed like five seconds, my plate of food was seemingly empty. My mom glanced at my plate and pointed to a few grains of rice and a speck of pork left on my plate. I proceeded to pick up the plate and shovel the last remnants of the food into my mouth using my wooden chopsticks. I instinctively looked around, guilty of my bad manners, but it seemed that I was not the only one using “bad manners” as there were no Americans to scold my eating habits.…

After being placed in our classes, different meals were served depending on what class you were placed in. Our meal consisted of sitting at a very fancy table. The table had very nice silverware, cups, plates, glasses, with flowers and candles placed in the center of the table. The meal started off with servers coming around the table pouring us a glass of ice water and a glass of sweet iced tea. Then the servers came around placing butter on a side dish for the rolls that were yet to come. Once they brought us rolls in a basket, then proceeded to bring us a very well prepared garden salad. After they saw we were done with the salad, they picked up our plates, and then refilled our drinks. Then the servers brought out our main course which consisted of small roasted potatoes, a piece of grilled chicken with a breadcrumb coat which was very tasty, also served with a side of asparagus. After we were eating our main course, they served us a huge piece of cake and a hot cup of coffee. Our whole meal lasted throughout the whole banquet whereas the others who weren’t in the…

In preparation for this reflection, I began by thinking about what cultural event I would most like to attend, what would work for the assignment and what would also benefit me in my personal life by actually forcing me out of my comfort zone to experience things I never have before. Because Christianity is such a huge part of my life I immediately thought I would want to do something based on another religion since I’ve never really gone out of my religious comfort zone, but for this assignment I chose to go to a gay bar. The reason I chose to do this was because I have been raised as a Christian, I grew up in a very conservative town and while I support gay rights being around gay people is still something that is foreign and a little bit uncomfortable for me. My roommate also chose to use going to the gay bar for an assignment for her human sexuality class, so while knowing that I would have my roommate going with me made me a little bit more comfortable I still knew that this would be something that pushed me way out of my comfort zone. We both live in Elkhart, Indiana so while we were home for spring break a gay friend of my roommates offered to take us to a club called “Metro” which is an 18 plus gay bar located in Kalamazoo, Michigan which is about 45 minutes away.…

But the new york crunch roll was my favorite!…
