Cultural Diversity

Week 1
1. The demographic changes I can think of are how the United Stated gives us the freedom. Freedom of speech, practice, religion, etc allows us to become our own person and also follow any traditions your family carries on. Freedom of speech is good in many aspects as to be able to express your self and your thoughts and letting you be who you want to be. Freedom of religion is important to most people and here in the US u don’t have to hide from anyone to have your daily services or do what you are accustomed to. Freedom of practice ties into religion but can be carried a little more farther as being able to have certain events, campaigns, take crazy vacations, and be able to go out to your local neighborhood parks and play a game of some sort with your family wearing whatever type of clothing you want to wear or even practicing certain ways or curing the sick.
2. Assimilation is a process by which a new group (or individual) becomes part of the dominant culture, either through gradual disappearance of the differences which distinguish the two groups, or cultural patterns of the new groups becoming part of the dominant culture. Acculturation is the first stage in this process in which characteristics of the dominant group are adopted by the new group (Gollnick &Chinn, 1994).
3. Differences in communication styles of a person from low context cultures to high context culture can contribute to misunderstandings. Gestures that some of us do like the book said as simple as nodding your head or pointing a finger can mean something totally different to others and in some times it can even be offensive. Other things that some are accustomed to like being very contact to one another can lead to discomfort and conflicts among families, children, and teachers.
