    John Locke

John Locke, an Englishman who lived from 1632 to 1704, promoted some of the most influential ideas of the Enlightenment. He pioneered the idea that humans are naturally good, and are corrupted by society or government to becoming deviant. Locke described this idea in hisAn Essay Concerning Human Understanding as the tabula rasa, a Latin phrase meaning blank slate. The idea was not original to him, however. In fact, Locke directly took the idea from a Muslim philosopher from the 1100s, Ibn Tufail. In Ibn Tufails book,Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, he describes an identical idea about how humans act as a blank slate, absorbing experiences and information from their surroundings. The same idea manifests itself in the life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). He stated that No child is born except on the fitra. Fitra here can be defined as the natural, pure state of a person. According to Islamic thought, all humans are born in a natural state of purity, with belief in one God, and that as they grow older, they adopt the ideas and beliefs of the people around them, particularly their parents. This is the intellectual forerunner of the tabula rasa that Locke learned from Ibn Tufail. Hb(k/LT02goUXVTUsUyTUVFUP…

Being In the Army, I had the opportunity to experience another type of culture apart from mine. My first deployment took place in Afghanistan, where I had the privilege to encounter the building blocks of their culture. They consisted of different symbols, language, values and norms. Their building blocks did not compare at all with the ones of my daily culture in the United States Army. I had many reactions towards their culture. I felt fear, nervousness, excitement, and some sort of interest towards learning their culture.…

Turning off of I-70 onto the Range Line exit, you coast down the hill, and come to a stop at the red light. Right outside of your driver’s window, not two feet away, is a man standing. He's holding up a cardboard sign, and looking out of the corner of your eye, you read, "Hungry. Homeless. Anything helps. God bless." His facial hair is out of control, his clothing is tattered and filthy, and you can see his big toe popping out of the tip of his tennis shoe. The man clearly looks like he is struggling. He makes eye contact with you. What do you do?…

Cultural identity refers to the identity elements of a group of people or a particular culture, or even an individual who belongs and influenced by a certain group or culture. Different current cultural researches and social theories have examined cultural identity. Recently, a new type of identification has appeared which analyze the recognizing of the individual as a integrated subject within a collection of different cultural identifiers. These cultural identifiers might be the fruit of diverse conditions involving: history, gender, sexuality, language, religion, race, ethnicity and nation. However, The divisions between cultures may be very fine in particular parts of the world ( that the citizens have different ethnics and social community is supported by shared social values and beliefs) , in places such as the United States or Canada. The cultural researches view on race and ethnicity certainly affirms the influences of the intersections of ethnicity, race and class.
