Cultural Diffusion: Scope or Threat

We are leaving in the age of science. Science gives us a lot of things. Though science is for our own good, some of the gifts blessed us because of proper use, and the others are destroying our life because of a massive misuse. Cultural diffusion is such an example of the second type of the gift. This was started to broad our mind and thinking, know about others, learn about others. But as we are misusing this great blessing, we are having those very little.

At first, we have to know ‘Cultural diffusion’ properly. So, what is this ‘Cultural diffusion’? What does it mean? Cultural diffusion is the spreading of ideas or products from one culture to another.  Direct diffusion of culture occurs when two distinct cultures are very close together. Over time, direct contact between the two leads to an intermingling of the cultures. Historically this occurred through trade, intermarriage, and sometimes warfare because members of the various cultures interacted with each other for long periods. An example today would be the similar interest in soccer in some areas of the United States and Mexico.  Forced diffusion or expansion diffusion is the second method of cultural diffusion and takes place when one culture defeats another and forces its beliefs and customs onto the conquered people. An example here would be when the Spanish took over lands in the Americas and later forced the original inhabitants to convert to Roman Catholicism in the 16th and 17th Centuries.  Indirect diffusion type happens when cultural ideas are spread through a middleman or even another culture. An example here would be the popularity of Italian food throughout North America. Technology, mass media, and the internet are both playing a huge role in promoting this type of cultural diffusion around the world today.

Bangladesh is broadcasting satellite channels since 1997. And lately started broadcasting other country’s channels especially Indian channels and that’s how the destruction has begun! Though India doesn’t allow any bangla channel broadcasting in their country, we are very generous and very host full, so we accept all their channels. Here is a discussion about the harmful effects of indian channels in Bangladesh. This is the main threat of cultural diffusion in Bangladesh.

There are some Bangladeshi entertainers who believe that they would be more successful if they copied Hindi serials and not to forget the often rather objectionable and vulgar music videos. There was also a time when Bangla film songs were an exact copy of Indian film songs. There still is a lot of influence of Indian movies in the Bangla film industry starting from the plot of the film, the costumes, songs, etc. Fortunately, things have started to change. Bangladeshi people, albeit not all, have begun to realise the true value and power of our own culture. Some people have begun to boycott Hindi programmes completely. But this will not be able to solve our problem.  However, I must admit that it would take many, many years before the Bangladeshi film industry would be able to attract people with this kind of mindset, to the theatres. Some people have been successful enough to draw the general mass into the movie theatres but that is only a handful. If the Bangladeshi film industry once again tries to make the kind of films that were produced in the 60s and 70s, rather than copying the Indian films, they would be successful in their endeavour to entertain the masses rather than the lower working class people.

In our internet we can download many ringtones. Various types of ringtones are available in internet. But the most noticeable fact is that hindi serial's songs ringtones are also available in internet. People can download ringtones from the net and use it in their mobile. But it has some demerits also. In our country we can see people are using Hindi serials ringtones. Specially women are using these ringtones which are really...
