CULTURAL COMPENTENCE
In this paper I will discuss the success of Mercy Mobile Health Care in meeting cultural competence. I will also show how Mercy Mobile Health Care has demonstrated the 8 elements of cultural competency viewed by the HRSA. I chose this group because I am from Atlanta Georgia and I am familiar with the Mercy Mobile Health Care facilities.
Mercy Mobile Health Care’s (Mercy) mission is to provide primary health care services to the underserved in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. The staff travels to those in greatest need and links them into a culturally appropriate and cost effective system of care. Individuals targeted include those who are homeless, poor, infected with HIV, or are recent immigrants and refugees. In addition to three fixed clinic sites, the agency uses five mobile vans and two fully equipped medical units to bring primary care, social services, and education to almost 18,000 persons. Culturally appropriate services include an information and referral line using trained bilingual Hispanic and Vietnamese staff who answer more than 26,000 calls annually; bilingual staff from the targeted communities trained to be medical interpreters and educators; and perinatal, as well as HIV prevention programs with specific curricula addressing the clients’ unique needs. (Cultural Competence Works pg 5)
Sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and Saint Joseph's Health System, Mercy Care Services was created in 1985 by volunteer nurses and physicians and grew from modest beginnings into a "medical home" that provides an efficient, integrated system of primary health care, education and social services reaching thousands of persons in need throughout Atlanta each year. They operate four fixed-site clinics: Mercy Clinic Downtown, Mercy Clinic North, Mercy Clinic at St. Luke's, and Mercy Clinic at The Gateway. Six other clinics are conducted in community partner facilities or onboard their mobile health coach.
