Cuban Missile Crisis Paper

9a) Source A shows that Kennedy was praised for his “masterful crisis management” and was even willing to risk nuclear war. This source and in particular McMachon claims that success was due to “plain dumb luck” and [also due to Kennedy’s caution and his ability to maintain his “remarkable cool under fire”.

9b) Source E clearly shows Khrushchev as being in control of the removal of the missiles from Cuba and this is seen from him playing Castro’s dentist, pulling his ‘missile’ teeth out. This source also conveys the message of Castro’s discontent. He is seen as an unhappy patient that did not have much say into what was happening in his own country.

10) Both source B and D are proposals to deal with the missiles in Cuba and both mention that their needs to some sort of negotiation or compromise in order to ease the growing tensions in the USA, Soviet Union and Cuba. However, both sources show a difference of opinion on what these negotiations should be and how these should be dealt with. Source B implies that the best agreement is with the use of “hardliners” and there is also a mention of “brinkmanship”. However, source B shows that Kennedy is trying to find a way to create a peaceful solution. Source B also mentions the missiles in Turkey place by NATO whereas source D does not mention them at ll. Acheson in source B proposes that the USA should use air strikes in order to get rid of the Soviet’s missiles in Cuba but source D shows that Kennedy wants to use non-violent methods in order to resolve the problem. Overall source B shows more of a violent method to solve the problem of the missile crisis whereas in source D, Kennedy is aiming for a peaceful solution in order to prevent nuclear war.

11) Source A is an extract from quite a recent book (2003) about the Cold War and its purpose is to provide quite a broad overview of the conflict at Cuba. In terms of value, this source is useful as it is more of an objective purpose...
